University of Chichester
From The Student Room WikiTSR Wiki > University > Choosing a University > University Guides > University of Chichester
Chichester Uni, in Sussex, is one of the newest universities in the UK having reached university status in 2005, but it's history goes back a long way to a teacher training college in 1839. It's also a very small university, having a little over 5000 and just over 3500 undergraduates. This small size makes Chichester uni have a small, community feel - you'll probably get to know a large proportion of the students here. FacilitiesLibrariesA pretty new LRC on the Chichester campus with all the usual stuff (quite a big range for a small university)and a media editing centre. Bognor campus library is smaller but holds the majority of the books for the teaching courses(bar PE which is held on the Chi campus). Group study rooms available. IT and computingTwo PC rooms in the Chi LRC (one can be used for lectures/tutorials etc) and a media editing suite. Also a small group of Macs that can be used as well. SportsChi is pretty good on the sports side. Plenty of sports students around too (you can't miss them!) All the normal sports are played with the majority having both male and female teams (hockey, rugby etc) Climbing is also available with both indoor and outdoor walls; also a riding club, watersports club, extreme sports club and even an ultimate frisbee club just to add a bit of variety. All clubs regularly compete through the BUSA comps and year on year the results are good. No swimming pool on campus but there is a public one about a 20min walk from the campus. WelfareChichester prides itself on the support the students can get and they're not wrong. Being a small university, if you do have problems there is always someone to talk to whether it's through your halls warden or your academic tutor. Can't fault it in anyway HealthcareBoth campuses provide students with access to duty nurses who are available for all sorts of reasons. The Chichester campus is next door to St.Richards Hospital, so if you hurt yourself on a night out, A&E is within stumbling distance from halls.
ShopsSmall shop on the Chi campus which is open 7 days a week and stocks the basic essentials. It's getting bigger and better by the day so it's always wise to pop in daily to see what they've got. Both campuses are within easy walking distance of shops. Bognor is easier for food shopping than Chichester is. All the Chi supermarkets are out of town bar Waitrose (but how many students can afford to shop there?) A free bus runs between Tescos and West Street in Chichester. It's advisable to club together with some mates for the return journey and get a taxi. You don't want to lug shopping all the way up College Lane RestaurantsFood on the chi campus is pretty damn good. Holts upstairs is a small coffee shop which sells hot food for lunch (jacket potatoes, paninis etc). Downstairs in the refectory, all the usual is available at good prices with a constantly rotating menu. Something for everyone. Chichester itself has all the usual names restaurants to eat in. Only thing it really lacks is a decent fish & chip shop in the actual town centre - the nearest one is a good 10/15min walk from the cross. BanksA very small Natwest is available on the Chi campus with random opening hours. Town itself has about 10 banks dotted around. There's a cashmachine in the SU bar TransportInter campus bus runs 7 days a week between Chi & Bognor. The first bus from Bognor to Chi is at 7.55. Gets to Chi for half 8 which is ideal for 9am lectures. Timetable is here: http://www.chiuni.ac.uk/studenthandbook/documents/BusTimetable2007_08.pdf Careers serviceAvailable 5 days a week with slots you can sign yourself up for. Plenty of info available needed for both jobs and Post grad courses etc. Part-time jobsAvailable on both campuses working with the SU. Also plenty of shops available in both Chi and Bognor that look for students. Religious facilitiesA small chapel on the Chi campus available pretty much most of the time, bar when it's used for some lectures (Theology students probably!) Uni has it's very own chaplain by the name of Hadge who's even on facebook! Every faith is welcome with a good open doors policy. Very active Christian Union SocietyLink title SocialBars, pubs and clubsChi's very own Zeebar which is a new build. Always has events going, theme nights, cheap drinks nights etc. Bognor has the Mack II - refurbished summer 07 and all reports are pretty good. Chichester town has a wide variety of pubs and bars with all the usual names. Lloyds and Chicago Rock are situated in the leisure complex to the south of the train station. There's places to eat down there too along with a cinema and a bowling complex. Club wise - two main choices: one club in Oving (just outside of Chi itself, buses are run by Stagecoach to it) and one on Bognor seafront. For serious clubbing head towards Brighton which is about an hour on the train. EventsAlways always stuff going on on campus. The two big big events of the year are: Varsity between Chichester and Portsmouth. Pompey suck and Chi likes to highlight this fact. Other main event is the Bognor Beer race which comprises as many students as possible running around Bognor in fancy dress on a pub crawl that starts at about 10am in the morning! Clubs and societiesWide range with new clubs appearing all the time. Sports clubs are as follows:
Societies:
AccommodationHalls available on both campuses. Chichester has some brand new halls which are as close to lecture rooms as physically possible. First come, first served policy with forms sent out early May time to students who have Chichester as their first choice. Most are catered halls, with a small number being self catered. Catered halls are provided with a small kitchenette though. Catered en-suite will cost you about £120 a week. Private off campus accomdation is available through the university accomdation office for both Chichester and Bognor. Bognor is the cheaper of the two to rent in. Student unionVery active SU which gets involved as much as possible. See www.chisu.org for latest happenings. EnvironmentIn the heart of sunny Sussex with the beach 20mins to the south and the South Downs 10mins to the North (chi campus). You're surrounded by trees and grass wherever you look. Pretty quiet setting without too much noise. Ideal if you're wanting the quiet life but enough going on to keep everyone happy. Has a really nice to feel to it. ArchitectureSome of the buildings date back to the original Bishop Otter college. A lovely building that has stunning views from the top floor overlooking the town centre. The new builds fit in well and everything looks like it should be there. The Bognor campus is again grass and trees with beautiful old buildings dotted around. Local areaChichester is a small historic cathedral town based on the 4 streets around the Market cross. With a lovely feel to it that really comes alive at Christmas, it's probably one of the nicest places to be in the SE. Quiet but there is plenty going on if you know where to look. Has quite a few celebrities in residence due to the nature of the Chichester Festival Theatre (where graduation is held) plus attracts many due to Goodwood and the surrounding area. Bognor is less historic but many are attracted by the beach and good weather. Teaching qualityAcross the board the teaching is very good. The staff are experienced, friendly and know their stuff back to front. Added to this up-to-date work, research and conferences you can be assured of getting the best and cutting edge knowledge for your subject Applying to ChichesterThinking of applying to University of Chichester?
