What one main thing would you like to highlight to future applicants? Username: JR Date: 8/01/10 Comment: Overall I couldn't recommend the University of Leicester to potential students enough. It's a lovely city and the campus is in a convenient location, near to the city centre and the train station. The renovation projects taking place around campus are going to make it even better and it's a shame I won't be around to take advantage of it. It has such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, both the uni and the city, which I think was the biggest draw for me to study there. If you have an offer but aren't sure whether to accept it, or you're deciding whether to apply there, I really would recommend a visit because that atmosphere will be the first thing you feel as soon as you get there; plus, it's a great university!
Date: Comment: Campus - Buildings and EnviromentUsername: JR Date: 21/12/09 Comment: The campus can be seen as quite ugly, but I definitely consider the university's range of buildings to be one of it's character building aspects. The Engineering builing (that's the one that is supposed to look like a ship) is just horrible tbh, inside and out, and the Attenborough tower isn't a great building either (though I spent all my time there so I love it). It also boasts a paternoster lift which is just so cool. The new library is pretty nice and looks great at night, and while the old SU building was ridiculously quirky with all it's different levels, the new one (given the plans) is likely to be so much better. From one side of campus to the other, let's say the library to the Bennett Building basement, you might take about 10 minutes to walk the entire way, but generally you won't need to walk between buildings more than a minute or two apart for your lectures/seminars. The library is always so warm even in winter, just don't sit by the automatic windows! The Engineering building lecture theatres are cold and uncomfortable, so thank god I didn't have more in there. Attenborough and Ken Edwards lecture theatres are fine and dandy. It's also situated next to Victoria park, a large expanse of green, which is a nice detraction from the concrete environment of the campus. I loved the campus, so I guess it's one of those things like marmite, you'll love it or hate it.

Surprising really, given that I'm actually not much of a reader (at least, I wasn't before I started!), so it may have been a strange choice. The English degree at Leicester, that I studied, was very historical in content, (for example, in the second year you study Old English (basically from the first recorded instand of the written word to 1066); Middle English (1066 to mid 1400's, really) and Chaucer (somewhere around 1270 IIRC), which is just ridiculous in my opinion) and this is the only qualm I have with the degree. The third year though, offers you optional modules as well as more contemporary compulsory ones which enables you to branch out into something more niche if you wish, which is great. My third year basically consisted of two Romanticisism modules, modernist literature, postmodern literature, modern poetry and my dissertation (which was on a contemporary author), all of which were really enjoyable. I'd suggest people applying for English make sure they actually take a bit of time over applying, because as well as the historical content, and the lack of optional modules until the third year, the focus is almost entirely on English/British authors, which I know some people were quite disappointed by.

Date: Comment: Non-University AccommodationUsername: JR Date: 17/12/09 Comment: In my second year I lived along Evington road, just by the Spar shop. The size of house the house was great and relatively cheap, and the area was far enough off of London road as to not be too noisy late at night, but close enough not to be in the so called "less safe parts" of Evington. Having both the Spar and Blue Point on your doorstep was brilliant, but Spar is quite expensive compared to major supermarkets. The location was close enough to the university to get there in 10 mins if you walked fast enough, but it never took me more than 12 or 13 minutes (to be pedantically accurate). There were problems though - the house was ridiculously cold and damp, and we couldn't really afford to have the heating on in the winter. Jalaram the estate agents weren't particularly prompt with dealing with problems or returning our deposits either, so I would advise people to make sure you sign a decent contract and keep phone numbers with you. The agents was about a 15 minute walk, so not too difficult to drop by if they weren't being helpful over the phone. Although as a white person in Evington you are technically a minority, I never noticed any sort of animosity between the different groups. In all, the area serves its purpose well in providing cheap and local accommodation with ameneties nearby, but I would advise people to make sure they take notice of the condition of the houses they look around because you might be charged for causing damage that wasn't even your fault.
