The University of Lincoln - “One of the country’s most modern and attractive campuses”. (Times Student Guide)

Lincoln is a lively city attracting over a million tourists every year. It mixes 2000 years of history with excellent shopping facilities, lively arts and events programmes, and a good range of pubs, restaurants and clubs. This, coupled with the low cost of living, makes Lincoln all you could wish for as a student city.

Courses at the University of Lincoln are designed to suit the demands of both students and future employers, and whilst at the university, students can expect to receive excellent teaching and support. The university is proud of the quality of teaching and learning it has to offer, with high calibre academic staff and a total of sixty world class professors.

The University of Lincoln is situated in the heart of the city of Lincoln. With an award winning library, a new state of the art student centre, and some of the best sport and recreation facilities in the county, Lincoln is a fantastic environment in which to live and study.

Facilities

Library and Learning Resources

Library and Learning Resources at Lincoln provide an excellent study environment within the University’s Great Central Warehouse Library on the Brayford Pool campus, as well as Learning Resources Centres at the University’s other campuses in Holbeach, Hull and Riseholme. These offer an extensive selection of books, journals, DVDs, dissertations, newspapers and reference materials. Other resources, including e-books, electronic journals and databases, are available from the University’s internal website. These can be accessed via computer workstations in the Library and also off campus.

The University provides a good student-to-computer ratio, with PCs, Macs and other specialist equipment spread across each of the main campuses. The University computer network allows students to access files, emails, software and the Internet both on and off campus. Students can also utilise the wireless facilities on-campus.

Sports

The University of Lincoln Sports and Recreation Centre is primarily used to accommodate the needs of both students and staff of the University of Lincoln, providing them with opportunities to participate in fitness classes and many sports based activities. Facilities include:

• Double sports hall • Four squash courts • Synthetic pitches • Fitness suite • Dance studio • Saunas • Students’ Union bar • 8 Badminton / short tennis courts • 2 Basketball courts • 2 Volleyball courts • 2 Netball courts • 2 five-a-side football pitches • 1 seven-a-side football pitch

Welfare

Healthcare

The University’s Health Centre is a NHS General Medical Practice run by West Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust and offers medical services to students. Situated on campus, The Centre houses an experienced team of doctors and nurses that not only provide help for specific medical problems but can also give more general health and lifestyle advice.

Shops

There is a shop on campus selling daily newspapers, snacks, and study materials. The city centre is a short walk away with a range of shops and amenities. 5 minutes from campus, and below the Junxion student accomodation, there is a small Spar, and behind it on the High Street there is a medium sized Somerfields and an Iceland. 10 minutes in the opposite direction down Tritton Road, past the Holiday Inn and industrial estate (with shops such as Homebase, Comet, Staples and Asda Living) there is a large Morrisons - within easy walking distance, but if ordering heavy items such as crates of beer, Asda do a home delivery service. Opened January 2010 is a brand new Tesco Express next to the Junxion on St. Marks, open 6am-11pm 7 days a week.

Restaurants

There is a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from in Lincoln. The city and surrounding areas have outlets that offer cuisines ranging from Brazilian, Thai and Mexican food, to traditional English, French and Italian. The Glasshouse Pub, next to the Junxion and a minutes walk from the Engine Shed, has a student meals night on a Thursday called Famished - £1.50 meals with a G-Card (you can buy them from the bar for £1.50) or £1 with a Junxion Priv card. The Laughing Bhudda, about 15 minutes up the High Street and near Ritzy's, also does a 50% off deal on a Thursday evening with a student card. There is also The Nosey Parker just past Morrisons, which does 2-4-1 on the majority of the main menu every evening. Yo Yo in Beijing underneath The Junxion now does a student night on a Wednesday where you can get a free drink (pint, glass of wine or alcopop) with your meal, plus they've recently brought in a 10% student discount - make sure you tell/prove you're a student before you're seated though as you might lose out on your discount.

Banks

There is a cash point in the Main Administrative Building on-campus, while the city centre’s variety of High Street banks is just five minutes’ walk from the University. There are also two cashpoints just by the Junxion front doors, plus one at the Tescos Express - if there's a massive queue and you're really desperate, Spar does cashback for a 50p charge.

Transport

The train station and bus station are a 10 minute walk from campus, the nearer you are the more services there are throughout the day but you won't have trouble getting home. The last train back from London is at 9.30pm - be careful if traveling back via Newark as there is often a long wait on the platform with no facilities as the toilets are locked at 8pm. Always aim to be 10-15 minutes early for your train or bus as the majority of student accomodation is on the opposite side of the railway lines to the station and depot - the barriers come down pretty much every 15 minutes and can stay down for more than 5. Better to be early than have to stand and watch your train go past you!

Careers service

Opportunities@Lincoln works with regional and national employers by organising employer presentations and job hunting workshops, as well as advertising graduate and work experience opportunities.

There is a dedicated team of qualified advisers available to provide students with the individual support and information they need when considering their future.

The careers service is open every weekday except Friday afternoons. You can go in to talk to an adviser at any time, but can also book more lengthy 'guidance interviews'.

Religious facilities

The university has a Chapliancy service for members of all religions and a multi-faith prayer room. Religious societies currently consist of the Christian Union and the Islamic Society.

Both societies hold regular meetings and host special events such as debates, teachings and gatherings.

Said societies are open to anyone of any faith and welcome involvement from anyone interested in participating.

There are 17 contemporary buildings of self-catering apartments, each apartment housing five to eight students. Some apartments have specifically designed rooms for students with disabilities.

The site has a range of facilities with a total of 1,037 bedrooms available and an enormous sense of student community. Fees include both heating and electricity bills, plus personal possessions insurance. Rent is £91 per week. It is recommended that prospective students look at all available accomodation, on-campus courts, pavillions, the junxion, hayes wharf etc before deciding. Courts are popular for 1st year students but the rent is higher than other accomodation. The courts are a mixture of buildings, some built fairly recently and those when the university was established. The older courts have problems with water, heating, fixtures and fittings, shower drainage and roof leaks. Please note you cannot choose whether you are placed in old or new.

For more information, visit the Accomodation Site.
