The University of Lincoln - “One of the country’s most modern and attractive campuses”. (Times Student Guide) Lincoln is a lively city attracting over a million tourists every year. It mixes 2000 years of history with excellent shopping facilities, lively arts and events programmes, and a good range of pubs, restaurants and clubs. This, coupled with the low cost of living, makes Lincoln all you could wish for as a student city. Courses at the University of Lincoln are designed to suit the demands of both students and future employers, and whilst at the university, students can expect to receive excellent teaching and support. The university is proud of the quality of teaching and learning it has to offer, with high calibre academic staff and a total of sixty world class professors. The University of Lincoln is situated in the heart of the city of Lincoln. With an award winning library, a new state of the art student centre, and some of the best sport and recreation facilities in the county, Lincoln is a fantastic environment in which to live and study.
FacilitiesLibrary and Learning ResourcesLibrary and Learning Resources at Lincoln provide an excellent study environment within the University’s Great Central Warehouse Library on the Brayford Pool campus, as well as Learning Resources Centres at the University’s other campuses in Holbeach, Hull and Riseholme. These offer an extensive selection of books, journals, DVDs, dissertations, newspapers and reference materials. Other resources, including e-books, electronic journals and databases, are available from the University’s internal website. These can be accessed via computer workstations in the Library and also off campus. The University provides a good student-to-computer ratio, with PCs, Macs and other specialist equipment spread across each of the main campuses. The University computer network allows students to access files, emails, software and the Internet both on and off campus. Students can also utilise the wireless facilities on-campus. SportsThe University of Lincoln Sports and Recreation Centre is primarily used to accommodate the needs of both students and staff of the University of Lincoln, providing them with opportunities to participate in fitness classes and many sports based activities. Facilities include: • Double sports hall • Four squash courts • Synthetic pitches • Fitness suite • Dance studio • Saunas • Students’ Union bar • 8 Badminton / short tennis courts • 2 Basketball courts • 2 Volleyball courts • 2 Netball courts • 2 five-a-side football pitches • 1 seven-a-side football pitch WelfareHealthcareThe University’s Health Centre is a NHS General Medical Practice run by West Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust and offers medical services to students. Situated on campus, The Centre houses an experienced team of doctors and nurses that not only provide help for specific medical problems but can also give more general health and lifestyle advice. ShopsThere is a shop on campus selling daily newspapers, snacks, and study materials. The city centre is a short walk away with a range of shops and amenities. RestaurantsThere is a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from in Lincoln. The city and surrounding areas have outlets that offer cuisines ranging from Brazilian, Thai and Mexican food, to traditional English, French and Italian. BanksThere is a cash point in the Main Administrative Building on-campus, while the city centre’s variety of High Street banks is just five minutes’ walk from the University. TransportCareers serviceOpportunities@Lincoln works with regional and national employers by organising employer presentations and job hunting workshops, as well as advertising graduate and work experience opportunities. There is a dedicated team of qualified advisers available to provide students with the individual support and information they need when considering their future. The careers service is open every weekday except Friday afternoons. You can go in to talk to an adviser at any time, but can also book more lengthy 'guidance interviews'.
Religious facilitiesA prayer room is available on campus. SocialBars, Pubs and clubsLincoln offers a range of different bars, pubs and nightclubs. If students prefer a lively night scene, the city centre has plenty of student-friendly bars and clubs, many offering special student nights and discounts. If however, students would like something a little more traditional, the Bailgate area of the city has a good selection of pubs. On campus, there is also the Students’ Union venue, the Engine Shed. The site, which provides space for up to 2,000 people on any given night, boasts regular student nights, live performances and much more.
Clubs and societiesThe Students’ Union’s Athletic Union (AU), provides opportunities for students to take part in sports and extra curricular activities. Whether they want to try something for the first time or have a particular talent or interest they want to explore, the AU helps students to get involved. Societies include: Alternative Music Biology Break Dancing Canoeing Cheerleading Drama Horse Riding Inline Hockey Karate Motor Racing Rowing Sci-Fi Snow Sports Surfing Trampolining. Clubs include: American Football Golf Hockey Men’s Badminton Netball Rugby League Volleyball Women’s Basketball.
Other societies include: Air Sports, Alternative Music, Afro-Caribbean, Beak Dancing, Canooing, Cheerleading, Christian Union, CIM, Drama, Equine, Gymnastic, Horse Riding, Law, LGBT, Outdoor Activities, Rowing, Sci Fi, Siren, Snow Sports, Surfing, Trampolining, V gas and X Delete. AccommodationThe University’s on-campus, student accommodation – the Student Village – is a stunning waterfront complex, situated next to the University’s academic buildings and within walking distance of the city centre. There are 17 contemporary buildings of self-catering apartments, each apartment housing five to eight students. Some apartments have specifically designed rooms for students with disabilities. The site has a range of facilities with a total of 1,037 bedrooms available and an enormous sense of student community. Fees include both heating and electricity bills, plus personal possessions insurance. This includes providing support in academic and welfare issues and co-ordinating student activities, social events, clubs and societies. Looking after students’ interests on-campus is central to the SU, but it also works closely with the University, the Police, local resident associations and other local organisations to make sure students enjoy their time in Lincoln.
