The University of Westminster was created in 1992 and replaced the London Polytechnic. It's located mostly in central London across three campuses with a fourth campus a little further out at Harrow. Academically the uni offers a wide range of degrees from biosciences and health to media and social sciences.

Facilities

Libraries

The Uni has 4 libraries: Cavendish Campus Library, Harrow Learning Resources Centre, Marylebone Campus Library, Regent Campus Library. All have basic library facilities such as private study work spaces, photocopying facilities and general lending services. Marylebone Campus Library and Harrow LRC also have group study spaces which you can book to use. You can use computer terminals in all the libraries while in addition Harrow had some Macs and Regent Campus Library has some dual English-Arabic keyboards. In addition you can use your laptops in the library so long as you don't trail any wires anywhere nor unplug the uni computers.

Opening hours do vary. The libraries have all the services open until almost 9pm most weekdays and are open 7 days a week. Marylebone Campus library and Harrow LRC are open the most, being open 24 hours a day for reference and study. Cavendish is open until 9pm weekdays with earlier closing at weekends and Fridays while Regents Campus Library is open until 11pm weekdays and 6pm weekends.

IT and Computing

You'll have the use of over 3500 computers (both PCs and Macs at various locations over the 4 campuses. Some of these are in the library and others are location in labs and classrooms so there are lots there - you'll be best looking for the ones nearest to where you life/study when you are at the uni.

As well as computer access you'll be able to get help during the day form the IT staff - each site has a central IT help desk.

Other services include the use of audio-visual equipment and printing services. You can also plug your own laptops in to various points around the uni and in some locations there is a wireless network. The uni has also set up a partnership with Dell to offer students special offers on great laptops.

Sports

The uni has spots facilities on the Regents Campus and Harrow Campus. On Regents campus is the great fitness centre and weights room as well as studios and a hall that can be used for classes. At Harrow Campus there is a multi-sports hall (for things like badminton, basketball, volleyball, 5-a-side football, table tennis, and martial arts) and a fitness suite. In addition there is the sports ground out at Cheswick. It has all weather and grass pitches and boat house on the Thames.

To make use of these facilities, the SU has a number of teams and clubs including:

  • Football
  • Taekwondo
  • Netball
  • Rugby
  • Rowing
  • Cricket
  • Jujitsu

Welfare

Healthcare

A nurse runs a clinic for most problems at both the Harrow and West End Campuses. From seeing the nurse you can make an appointment to see a GP too, but you're advised also to be registered with your own GP. You can also use the service for information too on things like sexual health, contraception, anxiety, nutrition and dental issues.

The service is limited to the normal hours the uni is open - so during the week day of term time only. For help outside these times you're advised to see your own GP or go to a walk-in centre (info about which you can get from the uni).

Shops

You'll be able to find loads of shops to sell anything within a short distance of the uni. Either, walk or catch a bus or the tube to some of the top shopping districts in the whole country.

Restaurants

The uni is based in and around central London so you'll have literally hundred and hundreds of restaurants to choose from. More so than at most unis, the choice will cover most types of foods and probably most prices - though they will tend towards the more expensive side due to being in central London.

Banks

Transport

Being in London you'll be able to make use of the extensive rail, bus and tube networks that run around the university. Cavendish Campus is nearest to Goodge Street, Great Portland Street and Warren Street tube stops, Harrow Campus is nearest to Northwick Park, Marylebone Campus is nearest to Baker Street and Regents Campus is nearest to Oxford Circus.

It's probably a good idea to have an Oyster Card if studying here to help with your travel costs, though whether you get a season ticket (of varying length) or pay as you go will depend on how often you expect to be travelling and how far you'll be going - so think carefully about what you may be doing in advance to get the best value travel.

Religious facilities

The Chaplaincy offers non-judgmental support and advice to all students. In addition, there is a Muslim prayer room and a multifaith quiet room on all of it's campuses which is very good provision compared to some universities. You can also get information form the Chaplaincy on churches and other faith groups around the university and in central London as a whole, so you'll be able to find a community for just about any religion while at uni.
