Welfare
The University has a learning support service to help with more academic issues and a personal support service for non-academic issues.
The personal support service includes a confidential counseling service, a welfare team offering information and advice and help and assistance with money matters and child care matters. Due to the high proportion of mature students the nursery and half term activity sessions held at the uni are very useful services to have!
Healthcare
When you arrive in Winchester it's advisable to register with a GP so you can get the services of a medical doctor when you need one. The university does have a medical centre with this service but does have a nurse available daily. Just make an appointment and you can see her in the clinic in St James’ Hall Room 11.
Something different about Winchester is that the clinic room them offers a range of complementary therapies on some weekday afternoons. If you think this could help you could have sessions of aromatherapy or massages.
Shops
The SU runs small shops on the King Alfred's and West Down campuses. The city centre provides a wide range of shops, but if that is not enough for you then London is only an hour away and well worth a regular visit!
Restaurants
For a small city Winchester has a more than it's fair share of restaurants and cafes.
Banking
Winchester has the following banks and building societies:
Barclays Santander Lloyds TSB HSBC Royal Bank of Scotland NatWest Halifax Nation Wide Britannia Building Society Winchester Savers Credit Union (through Winchester City Council). Cheltenham and Glouster

Whilst at university in Winchester you're unlikely to need much transport getting to and from the uni if you live in student accommodation. The main halls are within walking distance of the other academic and service buildings and are only 10 minute walk from the city centre.
Nationally, transport links are good, with trains running in to Waterloo station in London and many National Express coaches stop at Winchester on route all over the UK.
Careers service
The careers service will offer you a range of advice, information and tips on search for and applying for a jobs, further study, overseas and volunteering opportunities. You'll be able to make use of the service for up to 2 years after you graduate too.
Part-time jobs
Unlike a few universities, Winchester is happy for you to work part-time while you study here (so long as it doesn't interfere with your studying).
The careers service put up a lot of adverts for part time work on the JobShop website - both at the uni and in the wider area. You'll need your IT login and password to access the jobs, so don't forget them. The careers service will always have a paper copy of any advert for you to look at should you prefer that. Just pop in and asks them about it.
Religious facilities
The university has a Chapel for Christian Worship and a Muslim prayer room.
No other groups are directly catered for on campus, though a Chaplain is there to offer help to all faiths, especially in finding places of worship within the community. The University has student groups for most religions and for those not having communities or places of worship within Winchester itself, near by Southampton usually does.

Teaching quality
Has a new journalism department The BA and MA Journalism courses produce WINOL (www.winol.co.uk)
Winchester’s high level of student satisfaction was confirmed in the Guardian University Guide.
Winchester is a small university which takes great pride in the quality of its provision. That means that students will encounter academics who are passionate about what they teach and research, are knowledgeable in what they do, and share that with students. How much so, is up to the students. Tutors are regularly accessible, there are possiblities to embark in joint 'research apprenticeships', and they know you by name and care. Teaching innovation is seen as very important, and in many programmes students can take an active part in curriculum development, especially if you are willing to serve as student representative.
