The University of the Arts London is a federally structured institution comprising six internationally renowned colleges:

  • - Camberwell College of Arts
  • - Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design
  • - Chelsea College of Art and Design
  • - London College of Communication
  • - London College of Fashion
  • - Wimbledon College of Art

Drawing upon more than 150 years of experience, the university is Europe's largest centre for art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts.

Conception

The federal governing body was first introduced as the London Institute in 1986, and acquired university status in 2004 as the University of the Arts London. The six colleges comprising the federation have origins dating back to the mid 19th Century.

29% male to 71% female, with an ethnic diversity spanning 111 countries.

The Student Hub

The Student Hub is the central University headquarters situated at Davies Street (adjacent from Bond Street), which is used for administrative purposes, learning resources, support services and a students' union cafe/bar.

Learning Zone

The Learning Zone is an innovative, flexible and informal space for both collaborative and private study. Students from across the six colleges are welcome to use the facilities, including computers, laptop hire and rooms for presentations/rehearsals. The Learning Zone has extended weekday and weekend opening hours.

Student Services

Student Services offer a wide range of support services to help develop your professional, personal and creative potential. It can advise home and international students about financial matters, immigration, careers, counseling, health, disability, childcare, and pastoral care through the chaplaincy.

Accommodation

The University has 11 residences, from traditional halls of residence to executive apartments, with 1,750 rooms available.

Career Prospects

The University has the largest specialist information service of its kind in the UK, providing advice about employment, entrepreneurship, further study, professional practice, and upon graduation one-to-one guidance for up to two years.

International Centre

The International Centre manages international student recruitment and its network of local representatives around the world. The Centre and the local representatives offer specialist advice, such as course information and University services, as well as immigration, fees and practical day-to-day living. In addition to the main office at Davies Street, there are international offices situated at the six colleges.

Language Centre

At the Language Centre you can study English and languages such as French, Spanish or Japanese, before and during your course. The primary aim is to enable students to reach the required level for entry onto their main courses through tutorials, workshops and proofreading services.

The Enterprise Centre

Situated at London College of Communication, the Enterprise Centre provides information, advice and guidance on obtaining freelance work or self-employment and is available to all students/graduates from all six colleges.

The Student Led Volunteering Scheme

SLED is organized and maintained through the Students' Union. The scheme is to arrange community projects with partnered organizations, thereby offering training, support and expenses to volunteers.

The Erasmus Exchange

The program has exchange agreements with 40 partnered European Universities and specialist institutions. You can study abroad for a minimum of three months to a maximum of one full academic year.

International affiliations include but are not limited to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, US and the Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, Japan, where students have the opportunity to study abroad via exchange.

Young at Art

The scheme provides the opportunity for University students, who are interested in working with young people, a range of opportunities for paid and volunteer positions as mentors, ambassadors, assistants and more. The scheme is designed to help school children and teachers develop their creativity, and to gain experience of life at Art College through short courses, professional development, competitions and summer schools.

The Alumni Association

You are part of the University's Alumni Association upon graduation. With more than 175,000 former students and staff in the Association, you have access to a unique community of creative people with a wide range of interests in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts.

There has been a wide range of prominent practitioners who have graduated from the six colleges over the two centuries, obtaining eminent awards and changing the face of the artistic industries the world over. You can view some of the more notable alumni here.

The Emerging Artists' Program

This scheme supports up-and-coming practitioners to gain exposure to galleries, agents collectors and journalists through solo and group exhibitions as well as acquisitions and commissions. The University Art Collection comprises work from the students' degree shows and by alumni.

Libraries

There are nine libraries across the six colleges containing:

  • Over 310,000 books, including rare archival stock and some unique collections.
  • Over 3,500 magazines and periodicals, covering a wide range of subjects.
  • Over 10,000 videos and other media are available to view or borrow, including a wealth of archive material and online database resources.

IT and Computing

There are numerous studio spaces situated at each of the six colleges across the University, providing the latest PC and Apple Mac platforms. Standard industry software is available, including the Adobe, Apple and Microsoft suites.

Blackboard

Blackboard is the University's chosen Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). A VLE is an online electronic course management system which supports and extends communication between students and staff. It also creates new opportunities for innovative and interactive methods of learning and teaching.

Introduced to the University by the IT Research and Development Unit (ITRDU) in 2001, Blackboard currently hosts more than 340 sites across the University and is in use for course administration and communication purposes.

Blackboard provides permanent access to course information and learning recourses, improves communication and supports student centered learning.

A variety of clubs, events and activities are organized through the Students' Union. You can find more information via their website.

Transport/Location

Siturated on 24 sites across London, ranging from Oxford Street in the heart of the West End, to Millbank alongside Tate Britain, all sites have easy access to the London Underground tube network with stations that are fully integrated with the capital's bus and rail system.

Recent Developments

The expansive Parade Ground situated at the Chelsea College of Art and Design has been transformed into London's largest open-air gallery hosting events from film screenings to large scale installations. The Parade Ground officially opened in Spring 2008.

Initiated in May 2007, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design will relocate to a brand new landmark college situated in King's Cross in 2011.

The theatre at Wimbledon College of Art will be renovated as part of a million pound refurbishment project.

When applying to UoA you do not apply to the university itself. Instead you need to apply to one of the colleges which make it up. The Unviersity is also flexible in what you qualifications you need to get on to a course. Most students will have needed to have carried out a foundation year and put together an impressive portfolio to get a place.
