Contents

York St John is a University of Higher Education with an Anglican foundation offering degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The origins of York St John can be traced back to the diocesan teacher training college, St Johns College, founded in York in 1841. It developed through a merger with the women's teacher training college in Ripon in 1975 to form the College of Ripon and York St John. In 2001, following a wide ranging strategic review, York St John withdrew from its site in Ripon to consolidate and further develop its provision on it site at Lord Mayor's Walk in York.

York St John received approval from the Privy Council of the United Kingdom to become a University College and later adopted the full title of York St John University as of 1 October 2006. The name change came after York St John was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers in September of 2005 and full Univeristy Status in August 2006.

The University itself is situated just out side York city centre with the main campus being across the road from the ancient city walls. Accommodation is available on and off campus. Our off campus accommodation is situated within very easy walking distance of both the campus and the city centre.

Practitioners who teach can benefit from and contribute to the work of ALPS and its networks. ALPS will reward staff, with opportunities for Teaching Fellowships, sabbaticals and teaching awards.

York Nightlife

With around 20,000 students and thousands of tourists visiting the city all year round, York really is a lively place to be. It's great for nightlife of all kinds, it has pubs, wine bars, restaurants and cafés to suit every taste imaginable. York St John is literally minutes away from the city centre, so is perfectly placed for a night out.

York is said to boast 365 pubs - one for every day of the year! Real ale lovers are in for a treat, as are those who like the more modern café bars. There's something for every taste and pocket, and there are always special rates and student discounts to be found. The city is also brimming with restaurants and cafés - just choose to suit your mood and your price range.

As well as having many late night bars, York has a number of nightclubs that cater for students. These include: The Gallery, Tru, Club Salvation, BPM and Ziggys.

  • The Gallery comprises five bars and three main rooms including a VIP area. Although Tuesday night is York St John's official night at The Gallery, it is open every night and offers a diverse mix of music so there's sure to be a night to suit your taste.
  • Tru has four rooms and five bars, each hosts a different sound. Tru is open six nights a week and offers a variety of music on each night. York St John's official night at Tru is Wednesday and is extremely popular especially with the sports club members.
  • Club Salvation is the newest club in York. It is open seven nights a week offering something different on various nights.
  • BPM is a bar opposite Club Salvation, it's a bar that transforms into a nightclub and is more of a place to go at weekend rather than a week night venue.
  • Ziggy's is a nightclub in a converted house. It has different nights with different music and is considered by some to be York's main alternative nightspot, playing the best in NU Metal, Rock and Indie. As well as Ziggy's, York has two music venue/nightclubs Fibbers and The Duchess playing live music andr egular club nights.
  • Theatres - York has two main theatres, The Theatre Royal and The Grand Opera House, presenting a wide range of drama, comedy and music.
  • Cinema - York has an excellent art-house cinema called City Screen that, unique to its genre, boasts three screens and luxury seating. Here you can catch screenings of independent, mainstream and world cinema as well as some educational events, talks and previews. To see the blockbusters you can also visit the giant and modern Vue Cinema north of the city in Clifton Moor Retail Park where the choice is much greater.

Culture

  • York Minster - The crowning jewel of York's many attractions is its magnificent gothic cathedral, York Minster. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Minster is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, and contains more medieval glass than any other church in England. The medieval core of the city is encircled by well-preserved walls (largely 14th century) that contain four of the main fortified gates (called bars). The remains of two Roman towers may also be seen. The South Transept of the Minster was badly damaged in a fire in 1984 and has since been restored; in 1998, the restoration of the west door was completed.
  • The City Walls - York's medieval defences are amongst the best preserved and striking in Europe, from the former keep of the castle, Clifford's Tower, to the complete city walls, which provide an excellent route around the ancient city.

  • Museums - Among the city's notable museums is the Jorvik Viking Centre, opened in 1984, which provides a reconstruction of life in York when it was inhabited by the Vikings, as well as a display of numerous artefacts found in archaeological excavations. Equally notable are the National Railway Museum and the Castle Museum, with exhibits about everyday life in Yorkshire.

Further a field...

York is also a fantastic starting point from which you can explore more of what Yorkshire has to offer. The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are both National Parks, accessible by public transport, where you will find incredible scenery and bracing, fresh air. The seaside resorts of Scarborough and Whitby also make the perfect destination for a day out (and do great fish and chips). If you fancy a trip further afield, London is only two hours away by train and a train journey to Edinburgh will only take you two and a half hours.

There are some programmes at York St John that always fill up extremely quickly for example Primary Education, Film Studies, Physiotherapy and Psychology. UCAS can start receiving applications for entry in autumn 2010 from 1 September 2009. The normal closing date for the receipt of applications is 15 January 2010. If you can manage it, hitting this application date is a good idea. However UCAS accepts that this isn't always possible and late applications are accepted by UCAS throughout the remainder of the applications' year, with a deadline of 30 June 2010.

Applications received by UCAS after 15 January are considered by institutions at their discretion, and no guarantee can be made that they will be given the same level of consideration as applications received by the normal closing date.

Applications for programmes involving Art & Design

If you are applying for a degree involving Art & Design for 2010 entry, the deadline for receiving applications is 24 March 0010. We can however, consider late applications until 30 June 2010.

UCAS Extra

UCAS recently introduced a system called Extra, which operates from mid-February to June. If you find yourself without an offer, for whatever reason, and you have used all five choices already or if you wish to change your subject choice and decline your previous offers, UCAS Extra enables you to have an additional choice through UCAS. This will mean that if you do not have an offer at an early stage in the cycle, you do not have to wait until Clearing to continue to find a place.

Universities and colleges with vacancies in Extra will list them on the UCAS website. Applicants who are eligible will be able to refer themselves electronically via the Applicant Enquiries Service for courses with vacancies. An Extra Passport will be sent to you if you prefer not to use the Internet facility so that you can contact institutions for consideration.

Clearing

At York St John, we are happy to keep places open for applications for most of our degrees right up to the publication of A2 Level results. We are also able to consider applications in Clearing (the period after the publication of A2 Level results in August) provided we have vacancies. The UCAS website will indicate our current vacancies.

How is my application considered?

Most applications that are made to York St John are sent to us by UCAS. We will carefully read all applications and check to see that all general and specific entry requirements are met. This may result in an invitation to interview, after which we will decide whether to offer you a place. For certain courses, such as Teacher Training, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, we always interview candidates. Check out the degree programme pages to see whether a particular subject requires interviews.

We may decide to make you an offer without interview. You will receive an offer through UCAS and a letter inviting you to a Visit Day at York St John to meet staff and students and view our facilities.

If we offer you a place, the offer may be either Conditional or Unconditional. A Conditional offer depends on you obtaining certain qualifications or grades in your examinations and may also include other non-academic conditions such as Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure, an Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) registration (if you are not already registered) or medical reports. An Unconditional offer means that you have already met the academic entry requirements for the programme and have been accepted, though there may also be other conditions you need to meet eg CRB, medical. Please note, you will not be able to start your course if the ISA registration is a requirement of the course and it is still outstanding.

The offer you receive from us, via UCAS, will include information on any conditions that have to be met and guidance on how and when you have to make a decision on any offers you receive. If we are unable to make you an offer of a place, youwill be advised by UCAS that unfortunately your application has been unsuccessful.

What happens if I accept an offer at York St John?

If you accept a place at York St John (UCAS will ask you to make a decision when you have had responses from all of your choices), we will send you further information on the degree programme and details about accommodation, reading lists etc in May/June.

Conditional offers made by York St John are made in terms of a tariff score or the achievement of a particular level of qualification. In the summer, as results are received, we make a decision on whether to accept a candidate or not, as quickly as we can. For some students it may be necessary to delay a decision until the results of all students are known after the publication of the A2 Level results.

Students who have not met the terms of their offer will be ranked according to their tariff score/qualifications and we will decide how many of these students we are able to accept onto a particular programme.

As soon as we are able to confirm your place, you will receive an acceptance letter from York St John and a confirmation slip from UCAS (form AS12). The AS12 form needs to be returned direct to York St John. At the end of August/early September you will also receive final joining instructions from us. Please e-mail admissions@yorksj.ac.uk as soon as possible if you no longer wish to take up your place.

Will you accept an application for deferred entry?

York St John values the experience students can gain through taking a ‘year out’ or ‘gap year’ and we are very pleased to consider applications for deferred entry. Deferral is, however, conditional on the availability of the programme for the following year and on your meeting all entry requirements before your ‘year out’ ie by 10 September 2009.

If you decide to change your year of entry after you have submitted your application, please contact the Admissions Office as soon as you can for further advice. You will need to make this request in writing, by letter or e-mail.

If you are planning to attend an Open Day or are invited to a Visit Day or an interview, please contact us prior to the event, so that we are aware of any special requirements you may have. Wherever possible, arrangements will be made to meet your specific requirements.

The Admissions Office T: 01904 876598 or E: admissions@yorksj.ac.uk

UCAS Tariff System

UCAS (Universities & Colleges Admissions Service) operate a points score system for entry into Higher Education. The system gives numerical values to qualifications, allowing us to compare applicants with different types of qualification and achievement. Here at York St John, we are using the tariff system when making offers for courses.

On each of the subject pages in the degree programme section of the prospectus, the fact files give details of typical entry requirements using the new tariff system and the achievement of particular grades in given qualifications.

How do I work out my tariff point score?

Example: I have an A2 Level Grade D, a 12 unit (double award) AVCE at grade CC and Level 3 Key Skills in Communication - what is my tariff point score?

  • The A2 Level grade D is a 6 Unit award and therefore gives you 60 points.
  • The AVCE is a 12 unit award, giving you 160 points.
  • Level 3 Key Skills in Communication gives you 20 points.
  • Your total point score under the new tariff system is therefore 60 + 160 + 20 = 240 points.

For more information visit the UCAS tariff tables web page or call us on T: 01904 876598 or E: admissions@yorksj.ac.uk if you need some help working out your point score!
