TSR Wiki > University > Choosing a University > University Guides > York St John University

York St John is a University of Higher Education with an Anglican foundation offering degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The origins of York St John can be traced back to the diocesan teacher training college, St Johns College, founded in York in 1841. It developed through a merger with the women's teacher training college in Ripon in 1975 to form the College of Ripon and York St John. In 2001, following a wide ranging strategic review, York St John withdrew from its site in Ripon to consolidate and further develop its provision on it site at Lord Mayor's Walk in York.

York St John received approval from the Privy Council of the United Kingdom to become a University College and later adopted the full title of York St John University as of 1 October 2006. The name change came after York St John was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers in September of 2005 and full Univeristy Status in August 2006.

The University itself is situated just out side York city centre with the main campus being across the road from the ancient city walls. Accommodation is available on and off campus. Our off campus accommodation is situated within very easy walking distance of both the campus and the city centre.

Learning & Teaching Resources

Fountains Learning Centre This three-storey state-of-the-art learning centre houses resources of all kinds, including books, journals, media materials, archives and IT. There are also teaching rooms fitted out with PCs, facilities to connect laptops, plus rooms for group work and silent study areas for quiet reading. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the best student experience, our Fountains Learning Centre has been transformed during the summer of 2011. The three floors of the library have been modernised during this major £1.1 million investment project to enhance student learning, but the most significant changes have taken place on the ground floor. So whether you need to get down to some hard work with textbooks, surf the net for background information, or get together for a group discussion, the learning centre has facilities for all.
