Friday 20th March is the International Day of Happiness. It’s a time for people to connect, have a laugh and be happy with one another. The Student Room asked the community what makes them happy and saw similar things appear such as sex, food, animals.

TSRs jeanlucpicard shares a few things that makes him smile:

My mates

Whenever I'm down I like to give my best mate a call, maybe go out for a few drinks and have a bit of fun. You can’t beat a bit of banter on a Friday night down the local or having a kick about down the old school green on a Saturday afternoon. She-ra has also said that they're happiest when they're hanging out with their favourite people. How about dropping your best mate a text to tell them how much they make you smile? *sends text*.

My parents pet pooch

I like most animals, but if I'm to choose an animal of my own it would definitely be a dog. My parents have a six year old golden retriever; she’s very precious and extremely regal, but she's the best thing ever. TSR user ChemicalBond has said that animals really make them feel happy - "All animals- even spiders and insects". Spiders and insects really aren't for me; I think I'll stick with dogs for now. Here's my favourite dog video for you all to enjoy..

Nandos

OK, so I love food, fact. I’ve always had a bit of podge on me but I wouldn't have it any other way as eating definitely makes me happy. My ideal food scenario? Take me to Nando’s for a butterfly chicken burger, chips and garlic bread, you’re on to a right winner, TSRs user Lemon Haze agrees - so how about cooking something special tonight or go out for a nice dinner somewhere?

Holidays and travelling

Going on holiday is often stressful, but when you're away, relaxing is bliss. Recently I had the chance to explore the world and had one of the best times of my life. It made me sad that my travels came to an end but looking back on the memories that I'd created really makes me happy. Have you got any trips planned? If not, why not? Book one now so you have something to look forward to.

Relationships and sex

Who doesn’t enjoy sex? Sex and being intimate with a partner has been known to increase happiness. After you have sex, the body releases endorphins which decrease stress levels and improve moods. Sex is definitely on my list of things that make me happy.

Life’s too short too short to be down, so don’t forget to smile and be happy! I’ve left you with two of my favourite quotes. Enjoy.

“True happiness is... to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future” – Lucius Annaeus Seneca
“Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn't know you left open” – John Barrymore
