CGI’s story began in 1976 with two 26 year old entrepreneurs, Serge Godin and Andre Imbeau. The two started the company in the basement of Serge’s home with one client, one phone and a lot of ambition. Today, there are over 68,000 of us working across the globe delivering the IT services that matter. Our graduates and placement students are very much part of our story. They have worked on top-secret national security projects, they have helped send satellites to Mars, helped win multi-million pound projects and ensured that all our projects are planned and executed to the standards our clients have come to expect.
CGI offer undergraduates a number of different paths into the business and we want to give you a better understanding of them… so you can decide on which one is right for you.
Step Into CGI
Making a decision about what you want from your career can be a hard and scary decision, which is why we have created our event – ‘Step into CGI’ exclusively for second year University students on a three year degree course or second/third year undergraduate students on a four year course.
Step Into CGI is a 1 day course which has two main aims. Firstly, the day will be jam packed with advice, practical exercises and business games to equip you with some of the key skills you will need to successfully step into the job/placement you have been looking for. Secondly, as students will have gone part way through our application process apply for the event, should you decide to after the event, you will only be one step away from a position with CGI the following year.
A placement year with CGI will give you some fantastic industry experience and a head start for your future career. We provide opportunities nationwide to develop your technical skills, in teams such as Space and Defence and Public Services…. as well as helping you to develop a host of other transferable skills. Our placements are usually 12 month long and run from July – July, although based on your plans we can be flexible!
Technical Graduate Programme
CGI run two graduate programmes. The Technical Graduate Programme is for those interested in technical roles such as programming, development and testing. We have vacancies across all our major business units across the UK (c.100 vacancies for 2015). The Technical Consulting Graduate Programme is for those interested in the client delivery and project management side of our business, we only have 5 vacancies for this programme in 2015. CGI recruit graduates into all our major business units; Space, Defence & National Security, Public Sector, Energy & Utilities and Commercial. Although the best thing about joining us is that while you may start in one of these areas, the opportunity to move internally is huge, so you can take control of your career from day one.
What we are look for
We want students that are as passionate about technology as we are. The majority of our graduates have studied computer science or IT/STEM based subjects that required them to use complex programming. As well as an inquisitive mind, you’ll therefore need to be a strong relationship builder. You’ll need to be flexible, open to sharing ideas and truly collaborative in your approach.
We also ask that you’re working towards a minimum of a 2:1 degree or above in a relevant subject (usually IT or Computer Science, although we will consider other related degrees if you able to demonstrate clear experience with programs such as open source and/or programming languages including java, C++, C#). You will also need least 240 UCAS points, or equivalent, gained in one academic year excluding General Studies, and a minimum of 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, or equivalent, including English and Maths.
