Is the thought of being stuck in a lecture theatre for another next three years putting you off going to uni?

Does swimming with turtles in the Seychelles, farming in New Zealand, working with a Premiership rugby team or teaching orphans to ride in Zambia sound more like your thing?

Head to Hartpury University Centre for your degree and you can have the best of both worlds. No gap year required!

With our stunning 360-hectare campus close to Gloucester and Cheltenham as your classroom, you’ll find that a degree at Hartpury is much more than a piece of paper.

A world of opportunity

We work with industry leaders, professionals clubs and top companies in the UK and throughout the world to open doors to incredible opportunities for our students – from exciting work placements to amazing jobs.

Take Zoe Jackson, who carried out her scholarship-funded work placement on a dairy farm in New Zealand, or Johanna Olsson, who spent her sandwich year training monkeys in Kenya. While George Angell headed to the Seychelles to protect the turtles and gather data for his dissertation, others have worked with the international stars of the equestrian world and mixed it with Bradley Wiggins on major cycling tours!

But perhaps the most special thing about Hartpury is that there are so many opportunities to gain real world experience right here. Across Animal, Agriculture, Equine and Sport, our teaching staff are leaders in their field at the cutting edge of research (did you know that Eminem can boost your sporting performance?) and industry developments. That all adds up to a network of excellent contacts that open doors to dream work placements and job opportunities.

The real world on your doorstep

In Equine, we’ve had students complete their sandwich year with horse welfare charities in Egypt and with national magazines, but our new Rider Performance Centre, own commercial yard and Equine Therapy Centre, plus our three international equestrian events, also provide students with work experience and contacts within the industry on their doorstep.

During Tim Bell’s six years at Hartpury, he combined his studies with a role as full-time coach for Hartpury’s senior football team and Elite Sport support officer. He also carried out a performance lifestyle assistant role.
Tim said: “The opportunity to study and coach in the elite sports programmes meant I learned from the very best every day. The invaluable experience and the contacts I made at Hartpury undoubtedly led to me securing my current role with the Right to Dream Academy, where I discover and nurture young footballers hoping to emulate their heroes in Ghana.”

Our Sport students benefit from direct access to the professional clubs and organisations that work with us, including on their own doorstep! Take Sports Coaching student, Tom Reynolds, who worked full-time as the Academy Performance Analyst for Gloucester Rugby, whose training base is on the Hartpury campus!

Whether you choose to focus on Sport and Exercise Nutrition, Science, Performance, Coaching, Business Management or Therapy, you benefit from the opportunity to work with elite athletes and top level coaches from our eight academies in an environment that’s as close as it gets to a professional club.

Take a walk on the wild side

For Animal students, from Animal Management, Behaviour and Welfare to Animal Science with Therapy, there are opportunities to work with a wide variety of small and large domestic and exotic species – not only with our on-site animal collection but at the farm and in the canine hydrotherapy and equine therapy centres.

And for our Agriculture students, our new Farm Classroom leads out to demonstration crop plots so you can pop on your wellies and take what you have learned immediately outdoors.

Having a classroom in the heart of a working commercial farm –with 250 milking cows, 80 calves, 600 sheep and arable land - really sets Hartpury apart. Students help out with lambing, milking, calving, rearing and observe veterinary procedures. Our new farm facility at Okle Clifford is also at the heart of a new farm biodiversity project, offering exceptional opportunities for research.

And when you need to take a break, our university students have their very own ‘Legends’ bar on campus, as well as a thriving new Students’ Union with clubs, societies and activities to suit all interests. We’ve even got our own Costa Coffee!

Our students have gone on to some fantastic careers in a wide range of industries and enjoyed exceptional work placements. You can read our students’ stories here
