Chemistry C3 5.1 Structures of alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters.

HideShow resource information
What does the homologous series of alcohols contain?
The -OH functional group.
1 of 14
What does the homologous series of carboxylic acids contain?
The -COOH functional group.
2 of 14
What does the homologous series of esters contain?
The -COO- functional group.
3 of 14
What do organic molecules form?
The basis of living things and all contain carbon atoms.
4 of 14
What forms the 'backbone' of many series of organic molecules?
Carbon atoms bond covalently to form the 'backbone' of many series of organic molecules.
5 of 14
What are series of molecules that have a general formula called?
Homologous series. The alkanes and alkenes are two homologous series made of only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
6 of 14
What happens if one hydrogen atom from each alkane molecule is replaced with an -O-H group?
We get a homologous series of alcohols. Alcohols contain the functional group -O-H.
7 of 14
What does a structural formula show?
Which atoms are bonded to each carbon atom and the functional group. The structural formula of ethanol is CH_3CH_2OH.
8 of 14
What are the first three members of the carboxylic acids?
Methanoic acid, ethanoic acid and propanoic acid. Their structural formulae are HCOOH, CH_3COOH and CH_3CH2COOH.
9 of 14
What is an ester in relation to a carboxylic acid?
If the H atom in the -COOH group of a carboxylic acid is replaced by a hydrocarbon group the compound is an ester.
10 of 14
What are the first three members of the alkanes?
Methane, ethane and propane.
11 of 14
What is the structural formula for propanol?
CH_3CH_2CH_2OH.

**YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE AN ESTER FROM ITS NAME, STRUCTURAL FORMULA OR ITS DISPLAYED FORMULA BUT YOU ONLY NEED TO BE ABLE TO NAME ETHYL ETHANOATE**
**YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO NAME THE FIRST THREE ALCOHOLS AND CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND WRITE DISPLAYED AND STRUCTURAL FORMULAS FOR THEM**

**LOOK UP DISPLAYED FORMULAS OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS, ESTERS AND ALCOHOLS**
