What is a Stethoscope and how is it Used?
A simple piece of equipment that channels sound from a small metal dish through two tubes in the GP's ears. This can be used to identify abnormal noises from the patient's lungs, heart or chest. The stethoscope helps to eliminate back ground noise.

What is Palpation?
Feeling part of the patient's body with the fingers. This helps to detect abnormalities in the organs, such as tumours.

What is Percussion?
A diagnostic technique where the GP holds one or two fingers on the patient's chest/back then taps the fingers with their other hand while listening to the resulting sound.

What is Reflex Testing?
This is a technique used to detect nerve damage or to test knee reflex. The leg is relaxed and its weight is supported by the thigh. The joint is then tapped with a rubber hammer. No reflex can suggest nerve damage.

How is Temperature Measured?
It is measured using either a digital or oral thermometer. The thermometer is placed in the correct location e.g. forehead/mouth and remains there long enough to record an accurate temperature e.g. 30 seconds.

How is Blood Pressure Measured?
Using a sphygmomanometer: a cuff is placed around the arm above the elbow. A pump inflates the cuff to prevent blood flow then air is slowly let out of the cuff leaving enough space for the compressed artery to let blood flow through.
