Manages and monitors hardware, manages input and output systems, uses clock systems to synchronise FDE cycle

Immediate Access Store (cache)
Stores frequently used instructions. It's closer to the control unit so is faster than RAM

Arithmetic and logic unit
Carries out maths and logic on the data.
