The Student Room’s COVID-19 Misinformation Policy

At The Student Room, we are committed to providing a safe and reliable platform for our users to engage in meaningful discussions.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a lot of discussion on The Student Room forums about this disease.

Much of this discussion is constructive. Having a space where we can talk about the impact of Covid-19 can help us cope with the challenges, restrictions and tragedies of this pandemic.

However, there have also been instances where false information has been shared. Posting this false information online can put people at risk.

If you come across a post that you believe contains false information about Covid-19, please report this content. You can find information on how to report content here.

What constitutes false information?

The Student Room has a team of moderators who work hard every day to help ensure our forums are a safe and welcoming space.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, our team has often been required to remove content that contains misinformation. Misinformation refers to any false or misleading information related to COVID-19, including but not limited to:

a) False claims about the origin, transmission, prevention, or treatment of the virus.

b) Conspiracy theories or unfounded rumors about the pandemic.

c) Promotion of unproven remedies or treatments.

d) Dissemination of inaccurate statistics or data related to COVID-19.

e) Any other content that contradicts established scientific consensus or public health guidelines.

How will misinformation be moderated?

To maintain a high standard of accuracy and reliability, our moderators will actively monitor and enforce the following guidelines:

a) Removal of Misinformation: Any content that violates our COVID-19 misinformation policy will be promptly removed from the forum. This includes posts, comments, links, images, or any other form of content that spreads false or misleading information.

b) Fact-Checking: Our moderators will fact-check information related to COVID-19 using reputable sources before taking any action. In cases where there is uncertainty about the accuracy of a claim, moderators may consult with external experts or organizations specializing in public health.

c) User Reporting: We encourage our users to report any suspected instances of COVID-19 misinformation they come across on our platform. Reports will be thoroughly reviewed by our moderation team for appropriate action.

d) Warning System: For minor violations or first-time offenders, a warning may be issued. Repeat offenders may face temporary or permanent suspension from the forum, depending on the severity and frequency of their violations.

While scientific understanding of the Covid-19 virus continues to develop, our moderation team has been and will continue to be guided by the information released by trusted public health resources, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and GOV.UK

Therefore, in order to help ensure The Student Room’s forums can be moderated effectively and do not include false information about COVID 19, we are implementing the following policy.

If you make a post on The Student Room forums that includes specific information about Covid-19 (this would include information about Covid-19’s nature, its treatments, the vaccination programme or the pandemic’s statistics) this information must have originated from one of the following sources.

Sharing misinformation online can prevent the public from making informed decisions regarding their health, and puts individuals, families and communities at risk. In order to prevent this happening we are asking our users that if they make a post on The Student Room forums that includes specific information about Covid-19 (this would include information about Covid-19’s nature, its treatments, the vaccination programme or the pandemic’s statistics) this information must have originated from one of the following sources below.

Any content that cites sources not from the following list will be removed and the user will be given warnings via our carding system. These measures have been taken in order to moderate the site effectively, mitigate risk and safeguard our community.
