Six ways to make this summer an unforgettable launch pad for your career!

‘It all starts at yes’

You’ve finished your exams, you’ve thrown your papers in the air and now you’re ready for a long summer of no study, just fun! So what now? Those long, lazy days are stretching ahead of you as far as the eye can see…but you still can’t quite get rid of that niggling feeling that they’ll be over before they’ve even started!

It’s time to take action. If you want to make this summer count then grab every opportunity and experience every thrill, don’t spend it in a blur of duvet days and daytime TV. How we hear you ask? Well the good news is that summer is one of the best opportunities you have to make new mates, get yourself heard, gain new experiences and most importantly, have the summer of a lifetime! So, it’s time to get out there, enjoy yourself and make this summer the stepping stone to your future.

Grab that opportunity…

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 15-17 year olds in England and Northern Ireland. NCS builds the skills you need for work and life, while helping you take on new challenges and make new friends. NCS takes place over 2-3 weeks plus 30 hours dedicated to a community action project (out of school time) in spring, summer or autumn costing no more than £50 (free for some). So if you’re ready to experience one of the most exciting and rewarding times of your life, it’s time to join the thousands of other young people up and down the country taking part in NCS this summer!

Be independent…

be independent

Feeling slightly bored of your bedroom and your house? Well the good news is that there’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored! With the long summer break ahead of you, there’s never been a better time to set off on a life-changing adventure. Getting involved in an all-day or overnight trek and group cook-out in the wild outdoors or staying with new friends in a Uni halls of residence means branching out from Mum and Dad in a way you’d never have expected, gaining you valuable independence and in turn, the strength you need to forge those first steps in your career.

Take on new challenges….

With no study, no homework, no sitting in the confines of a classroom, the summer represents a huge opportunity of having the freedom to explore the world around you. Love adventure? With NCS you can learn wicked survival skills including: camping out, putting up a tent and making fires. Or if you’re feeling even more adventurous and want some added excitement, try your hand at white-water rafting, rock-climbing or archery. Summer represents the time and space to dip your toe into an entirely new experience. It’s your chance to explore and investigate your likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses - it’s the chance to discover you! (We’re sure you’ll discover you’re rather awesome too!)

Learn new skills….

Learning something new doesn’t necessarily have to be hard work. Are you curious about how to create a business plan or plan a project but don’t know where to start? Do you fancy displaying your creative powers via a killer presentation to a Dragon’s Den type panel? Or perhaps it’s something as simple but life-changing as learning first aid? Any and every skill you learn means something else that you can show off to your mates! Skills like communication, teamwork, negotiation, problem-solving, leadership and confidence and being able to illustrate them with real-life experience on your CV, Uni application or during interviews, will blow the socks off anyone interviewing you (plus NCS is recognised by UCAS! WOO!)

Make new friends….

You may have a solid crew of friends from your school and hometown but as the summer sun shines down, what if you could add some amazing new mates to your group? NCS means making many more friends, sharing a once-in-a-lifetime experience and having a laugh together! In fact, 95% of previous NCS grads say that the programme introduced them to a whole new bunch of people beyond their usual social group.

Stand up and be counted…

All of the skills, attributes and valuable qualities you will gain on NCS are not just for your own benefit – putting these in to practice and making a positive impact on your local community is a key part of the programme. Every lesson you learn, every situation you experience, every decision you make and every change you feel, will in turn give you the tools to change the world around you. Since NCS started in 2011, young people have donated more than 1.5 million hours to local communities, so it’s great to know that these new skills, coupled with your knowledge, passion and newly formed friendships have the power to make a real difference– and that’s something that not only helps you make your mark but helps you make a mark that lasts.

So if you want to take the next step in your career and have a summer of a lifetime then head to: It All Starts At Yes!
