Future prospects and training through the Fast Stream.

Responsibility comes quickly in the Fast Stream, so learning has to happen at a fast pace too. Your induction will introduce you both to the Fast Stream and to the Civil Service, and will help set your career in context. You can expect a combination of formal training courses and on-the-job learning, and we will support you with regular feedback and performance reviews to inform your personal devlopment. You’ll also most likely have a mentor or another Fast Streamer to support you through your development.

On-the-job training Your various postings will help you develop project management, people management, policy development and other key skills, and you will gain valuable insights from first-hand experience of delivering services direct to the public. As you move between roles you'll find you become more adaptable and resilient by adjusting to different working practices and environments. This will also give you a wide perspective of the many different reponsibilities of the Civil Service.

Formal learning Your on-the-job learning will be complemented by more conventional training and development, organised either within your department or by Civil Service Learning, the body which oversees formal training provision across the Civil Service. Examples might include communications skills, financial management, or working with ministers and senior officials.

Finance and other professional qualifications Fast Streamers have the opportunity to study for a professional accountancy qualification. Doing this while meeting the other, demands of the Fast Stream programme is challenging, but both the Fast Streamer and the Civil Service stand to benefit from it. Some departments also support Fast Streamers towards other professional qualifications, particularly if the qualification will serve its business objectives.
