When are the 2019 GCSE English and Maths resits happening?

Are you retaking your core subject GCSEs this year?

If your GCSE English language and Maths results didn't go as planned, you may have applied to resit the exams.

Students who have not achieved a grade 4 or above in these core subjects, and who will be going on to study full-time (540 or more hours) at a college, must resit them.

Those who are going on to study part-time (between 150 and 539 hours) or who got a grade 2 or below can take a functional skills qualification instead of a GCSE.

Apprentices will study Maths and English as part of their programmes.

We have a guide to explain all your options if you are disappointed with your GCSE results.

GCSE resits for most subjects take place in the summer exam season in May and June 2020, but English and Maths resits happen in early November.

  • By taking evening classes
  • Online as a private candidate

Where will I resit my GCSEs?

You will do your retakes in the same way you sat your original exams; in an exam hall, along with other students resitting the exams.

If you have chosen to enter as a private candidate, you should contact local schools and colleges to see if they will let you to sit the exam as a private candidate.

How much will it cost to resit my GCSEs?

There are two fees to pay to resit your GCSEs: course fees and exam fees.

If you’re over 16, have left school and do not have a grade 4 or higher in GCSE English or Maths, you may be able to study these subjects free of charge at a further education college, adult educaiton centre, library or other training providers.
