A Guide to TSR

How do I change my email settings?

In order to help you keep up to date with threads you have started and replied to, friend requests and other such things, TSR can send you email notifications. It is also possible to turn these notifications off if you would prefer not to receive them. In order to do so, click the Settings link in the menu bar, then choose Edit Options from the Settings drop down list. Alternatively, click to be taken straight to your Options page.
How do I change my password?

To change your password, hover over your username in the top-right of the screen, click 'My TSR', 'Account', and then 'Edit My Login Settings'. Then scroll down until you see 'Edit Password', enter your current password in the designated field, and then enter your desired password in the two fields below this.
I have a notification that won't go away, what do I do?

Hover over your notification menu, and then click 'Mark All as Read' in the bottom left. If this doesn't work then it's likely a bug, and you'll need to post in report a problem.
How do I turn off watched threads notifications?

To turn off notifications for all watched threads, hover over your profile picture, and go to 'My watched threads'. Under 'Watched thread notification' tick the radio button next to 'Receive notifications for threads I've created'. If you change your mind, simply repeat the process and change to 'Receive notifications for threads I've created, replied to or I am watching' instead!
How can I help other users on the site? E.g. applying to the team, answering unanswered threads etc

There are so many ways you can help other users! If you want something informal, then you can help out with answering unanswered threads - you can find links to unanswered posts by section here. If you fancy doing this as part of a team, you can also join the TSR Answer Heroes by posting in the linked thread.

You can also join the Peer Support Volunteers, Forum Helpers, or PS Reviewers if you want to help out with any of these teams. There is some information on how to apply to each of these linked on their names.
Why hasn’t my thread got an answer yet?

Sometimes it can take a little while for you to get an answer to your thread - our Forum Helpers, Volunteer Team, and Answer Heroes strive to give responses as quickly as possible, so hopefully you'll get an answer soon. If you've not had a response after a few hours though, please feel free to bump it!
Should I bump my thread?

Sometimes it can take a little while for you to get an answer to your thread - our Forum Helpers, Volunteer Team, and Answer Heroes strive to give responses as quickly as possible, so hopefully you'll get an answer soon. If you've not had a response after a few hours though, please feel free to bump it!
How do I follow a user?

The quickest way to follow a user is to hover over their username to the left of a post they've made, and clicking the 'Follow User' button to the right of the resulting pop-up.
What are the plain black user titles I keep seeing around the site?

The plain black titles are either the default TSR title for their post count, or a custom one they've created themselves. As you post more, you get different status titles under your name, or you can make your own. The status titles are listed below, along with the post count required.

What are the different user titles people have?

Aside from the plain black user titles you'll also see a number of bold usernames and user titles. These represent people who are part of our specialist teams, including Forum Helpers, Volunteer Team members, Community Staff, and TSR Group Staff. You can read about each of these roles and more here, or click on one of the bold user titles to get you to that same page.
How to recognise team members?

Aside from the plain black user titles you'll also see a number of bold usernames and user titles. These represent people who are part of our specialist teams, including Forum Helpers, Volunteer Team members, Community Staff, and TSR Group Staff. You can read about each of these roles and more here, or click on one of the bold user titles to get you to that same page. You can recognise team members through their bold and/or coloured username, and through the user title(s) they will have below it.
What does it mean when someone has a coloured title, but is not on any of the teams?

There are two main reasons why someone will have a coloured name or title, but not be on the team. The first of these is that they were part of the old TSR subscribers group; this is a paid feature that no longer exists, but legacy members have retained their coloured names. The other reason is that they used to be on the team - after a user leaves the team, they lose their bold username and their user title, but they retain the ability to change their username colour.
How can I get to unanswered posts?

If you want to do this informally, then you can help out with answering unanswered threads - you can find links to unanswered posts by section here. If you fancy doing this as part of a team, you can also join the TSR Answer Heroes by posting in the linked thread.
How do I see who has posted in a thread?

If you want to see who has posted in a thread, navigate to the forum it is posted in, and click the postcount to the right of the thread name. This will open a pop-up that shows you who has posted, and how many times. If you click the postcount for a particular user, then it will take you to a list of all the posts they have made in that thread.
How do I search on TSR?

To do a quick search, simply type your query into the search bar in the top-right of the screen, and click enter.

If you want to do a more specific search, click in the box and click 'Advanced Options' underneath it. You can then specify the forums and timeframe you want to search in, as well as whether you want to search within a specific user's posts, or everyone's.
What do all the different symbol links mean in and around threads?

There are a number of different symbols that you will see around TSR; these are explained below. If you're unsure about one not listed here, just ask!

- You'll see this symbol next to threads that you are watching.
- You'll see this next to any threads you've posted in. If you've not posted in the thread, you'll instead see a deep blue speech bubble next to it.
- Clicking this will take you to the first unread post in a thread.
- Clicking this will take you to the most recent post in a thread.
- You'll see this next to any thread that is stickied; this means that it will remain at the top of the thread list in a forum at all times.
- This symbol means that the thread it's next to has attachments in it. Clicking it will show you all the posts with attachments in that thread.
How do I search within a thread?

To search within a thread, click on the spanner and screwdriver in the top-right of the thread, and then type your query, followed by pressing enter. You'll then be taken to a list of results for that thread.
How do I filter forums in a search?

If you want to do a more specific search, click in the box and click 'Advanced Options' underneath it. You can then specify the forums and timeframe you want to search in, as well as whether you want to search within a specific user's posts, or everyone's.

To filter by forum, select the forums you want in the 'Search in Forum(s)' field. If you check the 'Also search in child forums' box, then it will also search in all the sub-forums; for instance, clicking it for Chat would also search in Forum Games. If you uncheck it, then it will only search in the top level forums you select.
Hello to the community.

I would like to know if it is against the rules of the community if I post an opportunity for students to write articles for my blogs. Students will benefit, as they will have the opportunity to do more writing and will get paid for doing so. Of course I benefit too, as I have articles written for me too. Students on English or literature courses or perhaps online media may benefit from the exercise, or at least I hope they will.

I didn't want to go against the rules of the forum, as that would be wrong..so I was debating whether this would be classed as advertising to post something like this.

Your feedback is welcome.

Thank you.

Welcome to this TSR guide to posting, thread making, and just generally using the site! Here on TSR it's all about discussion and community so we want you to be able to get involved as soon as possible, though feel free to just browse for as long as you like. Hopefully this guide will help get you posting like a legend in no time!

First off some terms you might need to know to get the most of this guide:

Threads are like conversations. Somebody makes a thread in a forum and people can post comment on them.

Posts are the comments you see within threads.

Forums are like categories for discussion and help people find the things they want to talk about easily. Each forum will have a list of all the threads that have been posted there. We have forums for loads of things from GCSE Biology to Fashion and Beauty. It's not all work here on TSR - we even have a Games Forum!

Hiya, I think you're best asking the staff members in Ask the Community Staff (it's a private forum, which means you need to start a new thread) who can give you a definite yes or no and advise you of the best forum to post this in.
