Well, the way it's going, they're gonna sack all you medical types and you'll have to go to Poland to work for £1 a day - whilst the NHS bolsters it's ranks with retarded lower and middle (and upper) management drones.

Woohoo.

Dunno want binmen get, but tube drivers get £30k+ and about half the year off. Sounds good to me.

The thing with audiology is... the admin & lecturers will make you go into the nhs and say quite alot of lies to deceive students in going to the nhs. The reason we are getting funded is because we are meant to be working in the nhs after we graduate. One time i said something to my lecturer about an alternative way to make money [i was told this on my placement by a doctor who gave me advice how to earn $$$$] and my lecturer got :mad:

Another thing, the course is kinda boring imo. It's full of so many different aspects that every1 is gonna get bored with something and about the 2000 graduate comment, there has only been about 20-50 graduated so far lol.

Hello all

I'm currently a third year audiology student so thought I should add my thoughts!
Not many people are aware of this but the audiology field is vastly changing. The reason the degree was introduced was to ensure that audiology 'catches up' with optometry. The private sector is soon to become state registered which means like opticians, places such as specsavers hearcare will see both nhs and private patients. Also before to work in the private sector you had to complete a different set of exams, but now the private sector work will only be open to those who have BSc in audiology. For those who are unable to do BSc audiology for whatever reason they will be introducing a foundation degree in audiology, but obviously all those people who will complete this will only be able to do a few things compared with those with the four year degree; so I guess they'll be the 'optical assistants'...I suppose they'll be called hearing aid assistants or something!
Another misconception about the degree is that you only deal with hard of hearing people but obviously you also get to deal with vertigo, balance patients too.
Regarding how much you'll be earning, well that does depend on where you'll be working and what you decide to take up. So if you go into hearing therapy then your pay scale will be different compared to those who go into balance testing and rehab.

i am doin biomed at bradford then hoping to do a masters after 3 years in audiology i am told after this i can work for the nhs on band 7(clinical scientist) £26,400-36,400 as im more qualified.

i was wondering if i do a masters in manchester or london hac registered by the way, can i work privately or open my own place up or work for for instance specsavers hear care? ho much do earcare at specs atcually earn i cant find info anywhere?

also i want more info on wages as its hard to find what doe the standard and experienced audiologist earn will it be higher in the future?

yes u need to HAC accredited to do private work. band 7 will take some time to get to, but i wouldnt be suprised if it all changed soon. theres no info on wages due to such big changes happening in audiology. there are still non degree audiologists working within the NHS who qualified the old way (diploma/trained in house). when u come out of school u will be band 5 already on this new 4 year BSc. Its a good specialist degree with lots of people skills required. I wouldnt reccomend doin a degree previosu with audiology in mind. I'd first ring up the universitys and ask how long they expect the MSc to last, i heard theyre phasing out due to our new 4 year BSc. so by the time u qualify u may need to do another 4 years to become an audio.

There's a lot of pros and cons. It's not worth doing to earn "big money" as this definately doesn't happen anymore if you're a new applicant. Do audiology if you like hearing, social science, basic sciences and some clinical contact and not for the money imo because there really isn't none.

I've just finished my GCSEs and I am interested in becoming an Audiologist, I am hoping to get some work experience with Hidden Hearing but is it better to go private or NHS? Because I've heard Hidden Hearing do a 2 year course after your A Levels as an alternative to Uni. :confused:

Also, for A Level I'm taking Biology and Psychology, is this okay? :smile:

I'm an Audiology graduate from UCL and I got a first.
If your ambitious and just want enough money to survive, don't do Audiology. I don't think degree even exists anymore. Private companies send people on two year non degree courses and they become hearing aid dispensers (HAD's), Because of this the need to pay outside the nhs according to band has gone down the drain. Because of these horrible private companies that want to bonus you for hearing aid sales that wont happen. I'm talking basics of 16k, 18k, and 23k,
All the NHS audiologists are worried about their jobs, because most of them are indeed just band 5 and if Audiology departments close down (as private companies start taking over NHS contracts, (should never have, they want profit not good healthcare) they will lose their jobs. The Audiology departments everywhere are small. It is literally like waiting for your head of department to die or retire and then everyone moves up a band. The waiting lists are also long not because of a shortage of Audiologists but because of a shortage of money in NHS departments to hire enough audiologists.
i wish I'd done something else to be honest. Optometrists have a soulless commercialized job but at least their basic is over 25k.

hello hannah it was interesting your post , i wented so badly to apply for ucl Audiology course 4 years ago unfertunitly i cound get a place i choose engineering hopping that i could do the msc one do you thing it is worth doing it
