Righto when the final thread "TSR Recommends" goes up which has all the films (highest ranking), I was hoping to incorporate special lists beneath the TSR list. Lists from regular FF posters/people who watch a lot of films. Basically, each poster's top 10/20/however you want - film recommendations.

So if anyone is willing (quoted or not quoted), please let me know (posting/private message) by composing a list of recommendations. It would be nice to have some member lists as some people that post here have a particular good sense and taste in films and cinema. This is where obscure films/films that are receiving few nominations in the main list can really shine.

I'm hoping to end up with a single master thread that goes;

TSR list
IMDB list
Experienced member #1 recommend list
Experienced member #2 recommend list

Spoiler

Top 20 recommends:

City of God
A Prophet
Remember the Titans
Glory
Men of Honor
Platoon
Pan's Labyrinth
Full Metal Jacket
Good Will Hunting
Taxi Driver
Scum
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
If
Withnail and I
Starship Troopers
Gandhi
The Deer Hunter
Casino
Sin Nombre
Trainspotting

I know I'm a bit late to the party but Inception was utterly brilliant.
I'm watching this new Spanish film. It's quite enchanting and illuminating. It's called Totalmente Pretencioso.

It's a philosophical examination of the universe. :beard:

I limited myself to twenty, but could've mentioned plenty more. Part of the reason I didn't was because they're films like the Shawshank Redemption and Fight Club, which tend to appear multiple times in recommendations anyway.

Added musicals to my OP. :h:
James Bond film budgets are just mental.

Quantum of Solace - $200m!
Casino Royale - $150m!
Die Another Day - $140m!
The World is Not Enough - $135m!
Tomorrow Never Dies - $110m!
Moonraker - $35m back in 1979!

Maybe MGM deserved to go broke, these budgets are a joke. I mean, I love Casino Royale but I'm pretty sure you could have shot that film for less than $100m, easily.

You'd think they'd learn - the best Bond film ever was made for $2m and had no superfluous explosions or stupid set-pieces.

Half of that budget is probably used for marketing tbh.

Most budgets that are described are what's known as "first cut" - which is only the cost associated with the production i.e. no post-production editing, no marketing. This is why films like Primer can carry the label of only being made for $7,000 dollars and still not look terrible, because they don't have to factor in any of the costs which make the film look good.

Even if you assume best case that these also include post-production (which is a good possibility) there is no way the figures should include advertising... Ok, I've checked the numbers and for some reason the Casino Royale budget I quoted does include advertising of $43m, taking it down to an almost acceptable level. However, the others don't.
Watching Primer.

Yeah, I'd agree with Slumdog Millionaire. Never watched Napolean Dynamite.

Don't bother if you ever have the choice between that or something else, I wanted that hour of my life back. :p:
