What's the point in going out on a Friday night if you don't drink?

So last night I went out with a bunch of friends to celebrate one of their birthday parties. This included the usual sort of thing, going to bars and nightclubs. Now I'm a Muslim, and I don't drink, but I still go to these places when asked out, I just don't drink.

So a slightly unusual incident occured when one of the bouncers asked me where I'd been drinking. I told him that I don't drink. So he said, "What's the point in going out on a Friday night if you don't drink?".

I found this question to be quite an interesting one. I mean, what is the point? I didn't drink, but I still had quite a good time. I didn't need to get drunk in order to socialise, dance, or enjoy myself. Surely an integrating Muslim is better than one who stays at home on a Friday night and becomes isolated, and consequently despises the society he lives in?

What do you make of this?

Dance and socialise... Most people who are used to doing this drunk will find it hard.

But I completely accept your point. Id much rather have Muslims integrate within a group so people can actually realise they're not what the EDL and the BNP portray them all to be.

I, personally hate going to clubs without at least not having a few drinks, I used to do it a bit when id drive my mates over to Liverpool... but its just not as memorable for me.

You don't need to drink to have a good time. It helps lighten to mood, but it's not necessary. I'd much rather not drink than get stupid and paralytic and wake up in a gutter.

You don't need to drink to have a good time. the society makes it looks like it not good to not drink.
Should have replied to the bouncer "perhaps to work, like you?".

Not necessary man. There's a time and a place to argue about religion, but that's just harsh.

HATE HATE HATE posts like this. There is a median between sober and that you know! A few drinks to relax and lighten up is fine, drinking to deliberately get wasted is a bit silly. I can have 3 or 4 double jds and cokes or several pints and be completely fine. Having a good time, but not wasted.
I think it was more a question of them not believing you.

it is and good for you - however some people have the mentality that you must be drunk to have a good time. Boucners see the worst states people get in when drunk.

Dont worry about it - you dont need booze to enjoy yourself that more than many people can say

I'm not against drinking, not in the slightest, I'd actually much prefer to have quite a few drinks than not drink at all. But some people get wasted every single time they go out, they feel horrible the next day and don't remember a thing... I don't see the point. What I'm saying is people who don't drink at all will enjoy themselves much more than people who constantly drink FAR too much.

Bouncers work with drunk people all the time, so I guess that to see someone sober who doesnt drink is quite unusual for them, I would take no notice.

I dont drink either, not for religion or any other reason, I just dont. Doesnt stop me from going out and my friends arent bothered either way

Nowt wrong with not drinking on a night out, perfectly possible to still have a good night.

Ouch, my brain.
There is nothing wrong with it, my reply would have been, 'Why do I need to drink to have a good time/go out on a Friday night?'

As a heavy drinker (or rather, was a few months ago before I started smoking the wacky stuff again) I disagree. If I go out to the pub for a night, I would always drink to get drunk. It's what we done to blow off steam, thus felt great for it.
I can't imagine going to the pub and being sober, the night would go on forever. Having been the only sober person at a "social" (for lack of a better term) before (I was on some form of medication, can't remember what), it really takes the piss watching everyone else get absolutely wrecked around you while you're unable to drink a drop.
I can't see the point of going out even if you do get drunk. I'd rather stay in with a couple of cans plus friends.

Im sure you can have just as much fun not drinking, but surely it restricts the number of girls you can get with? Since the general rule is you have to be about as drunk as the girl for it not to look as though you're taking advantage of her.

You've answered your own question! You're right, so don't worry. You CAN go out and have a good time sober.
