What would you observe if you heated a crystal?

if you heated a crystal, which was in a test tube, what would you observe?
also, why would you need to put in litmus paper? - presumably for gas released or w/e?

Not really able to help you unless you're more specific here I mean even ice is a crystalline solid, so it really depends on what its a crystal of
