Aberdeen compared to other cities?

Hey hey hey, im applying to liverpool, leicester, heriot-watt(edinburgh) and aberdeen/robertGordon(aberdeen :P)
Im aware the first unis all offer a fairly cosmopolitan experience but how does aberdeen compare, just as ive never really been to scotland beyond edinburgh and would like some ideas on how the city compares to others in terms of shops, activities and student friendliness.
Im from Newcastle, which I hear is the best student city but I want away :P

It's small and compact. There's lots of bars and pubs and clubs and they're all situated quite closely together. You'll soon start to see the same faces and it's not the type of city where you can be almost completely anonymous. The gyms of both universities are first class as well and there's plenty of other types of entertainment.
Stay in Newcastle :woo:

I wish I had :o:

Oooo, your from Newcastle? Where did you go study?

It's cold, and isolated.

Apart from that it doesn't seem too bad. :P
Here's my reply from the other thread (which was posted today actually):

Aberdeen's one of the most underrated student cities out there. It's a good sized city, not so big that you'll get lost or overwhelmed, and not too small either. Everything is fairly close together, and there are lots of bars and nightclubs to choose from (Liquid, Korova, Exodus, etc).

The city is incredibly safe, though I heard that it does have its bad parts. Even then, Aberdeen's workers are the highest paid in Scotland (richer than Edinburgh). So it's a fairly wealthy city. And this is reflected in the range of shops that run along the city centre. I've not once felt threatened or intimidated, not once. Whereas in London (where I come from), you can't spend two months wondering the city without being robbed at least once.

The city centre is also within easy access to all. I live pretty much right next to the main university campus, and I never bother with buses and just make the short fifthteen to twenty minute walk to the 'city'.

Overall though, it's most definitely far superior to Dundee (and to a lot of other places in fact).

I am indeed  I went to Manchester......I never realised how much I loved Newcastle until I moved away from it.

Why don't you apply to Newcastle instead of somewhere else then?

Because like most students who attend ex-polytechnics, she refuses to tell you the whole story.

She studies at the Manchester Metropolitan University, using its location to give you the impression that she studies at the University of Manchester without actually lying.

So I'm sure you can conclude for yourself that her grades would not be good enough to get her into the University of Newcastle.

Nobody asked for my story. What details would you like?

I've never shielded the fact that I go to MMU. If you had read what he said to me correctly, he said WHERE do you go to uni? Not WHAT UNI do you go to. Duh

Oh, and Newcastle Uni isn't the only uni isn't the only Newcastle you know. There is also Northumbria. Which btw has a very good reputation up this end.

I got the same grades at A Level as what you did sweetheart, so pull your head out of your arse. You have no more reason than I do to be a snob. Aberdeen I believe ask for CCC for Maths right?

So you're comparing the Manchester Metropolitan University with the University of Aberdeen?

Aberdeen are actually asking for BBB this year. In the Research Assessment Exercise of 2008 they came 8th for Pure Mathematics.

Remember, entrance requirements are just popularity contests. And you also fail to take into account that Aberdeen is a Scottish university, meaning that it's a four year degree as opposed to a three year one, so of course their requirements are going to be lower if they have an extra year. Just so you know, for second year entry, they ask for A grades.

You might have achieved the same A level grades as me, but that doesn't change the fact that I made the far better choice in terms of my education.

Right, so I suppose if an Oxford Brookes student was asked where he studied, he should reply with "Oxford". A bit misleading, don't you think?

My friend who used to live up there says it was a pretty depressing place to live, especially in the winter. I can't really comment since I've not been, however from what I've heard the night life isn't the best.

You're so so so so so so so so so... rude. I wish you never spoke, you don't do Aberdeen any justice by being like that...

EDIT: which is the opposite to what you're trying to do..

Let me put it to you this way. In winter, most places in the UK are very cold. In Aberdeen, it's also very cold, but we have lots of snow as well. So rather than being depressing, it's actually white and beautiful. How winter should be.

Compared to where, and what aspect of it? For it's relative size the nightlife is excellent and you can't really ask for much more.

No I wasn't comparing the uni's, I was making a point. You were the one banging on about entrance grades, I was merely pointing out that I have the same grades as you, therefore you have no right to imply that your grades are any better than mine.

Yes, Aberdeen are asking for BBB THIS year. But when you applied, they were asking for CCC. (So therefore, you still have no right to have a go at me).

 Does it make you feel better TRYING to put others down? I mean seriously, what do you achieve from it exactly?

No. Like I said before. He asked where I was studying, not what uni. Plus, since the conversation was pretty much based on uni location, I think it was only necessary to mention location.

The question of what University never came into it. You go to Aberdeen, we get it, it's really not that good of a University, no matter how far you push your penis into it. Don't go criticising ex-polys when your own Uni isn't exactly Oxbridge. Aberdeen is a drab place, been there a few times. Edinburgh is a much nicer place.

And I made the most of my (I admit, poor) grades.

So? That just shows I that I got in before it was too late.

No it isn't. Edinburgh's a touristic city (not a great one at that) and it's novelty wore out for me after the first day.

Maybe, but from what I've heard it just looks even greyer, and even gloomier. You won't ever admit that Aberdeen isn't the best place ever, but still.

Compared to most other major cities? Again, I can't really comment, however I go to Birmingham for a night out and my friend would without a doubt say it was far better than Aberdeen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Aberdeen is a great place to live/study/socialise. Just don't think its as superawesome as you always make out.

You obviously have very poor taste. Aberdeen isn't a patch on Edinburgh.

Oxford and Cambridge are in a league of their own.

And Aberdeen isn't in much higher a league as the ex-poly's

Shut up RamocitoMorales. If there are people like you in aberdeen..i will never ever go to aberdeen.Seriously shut the **** up!!
