Say to who? The bereaved? Say "you're sorry for their loss". Formulaic, yeah, but they know that the sentiment is there. If they're someone you're close to you could also add something like "if there's anything I can do :smile:"

It's only meaningless if you are just saying it for the sake of it. If you're only saying it for the sake of it then you should just not say anything.

Just before I left for lunch, I put my unfinished can of Blue Bolt in an empty Mini Cheddars tin, to see if it would keep the fizz. It did. I think it's a discovery worth noting.
