Yes we are taught about different countries all over the world in school, but never about their thoughts on our country. That's why I chose to post this thread, to get more opinions and have a better view of what others think. Just because many of the Americans you have met don't have much knowledge on the topic of other countries doesn't mean we're naive, bad people, or ignorant. My main point of this thread is because I was tired of people assuming that all American's are the same and that it is okay to bash someone for the fact that they are one. I know our country isn't perfect and yeah there are alot of stupid people here but there are so everywhere. Also, like I said in another post, if I heard/saw someone from my country bashing another for living in a different country I would tell them to shut up too. Let me also say something to hopefully make things a bit clearer: I didn't start this post because I want everyone to like Americans I was posting it because I think it's wrong for people to start arguments over such a thing. (Sorry, I really don't mean to sound rude and ramble on. I'm not stating that what I think should rule either.)

You're entitled to like your country. I'm entitled not to. Here's why (a few choice reasons, there are many more)

1.) You are home to more extreme religious fanatics / right-wing nutjobs per capita than any other country since Nazi Germany (with the possible exception of Iran).
2.) For the past 100 years you have flouted the sovereignty of countless other nations to further your own aims, values and religion.
3.) Recently, you set off a war which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, and we still don't know why you did it.
4.) You re-elected Bush
5.) The Americans we get to see abroad tend to be loud, arrogant and somewhat brutish.
6.) You're sore losers.
7.) Some of you actually listen to Glenn Beck.
8.) Others amongst you considered voting for the bimbo-cum-lunatic that is Sarah Palin.
9.) You are a country built on immigration, and yet you are now doing your best to persecute immigrants.
oh and
10.) Despite the guaranteed right to freedom of speech, the liberty which is mentioned so often as sacred in your consitution, and so many other big statements, when a normal, everyday man tries to expose your inner dealings to the public, your leaders accuse him of terrorism and start an international manhunt for him.
11.) Socialism is practically a swearword in your country.

Of course no one is perfect, so here's a few reasons I do like your country.

1.) You are home to some of the most intelligent, witty and kind people in the world.
2.) You are home to the worlds finest universities.
3.) You elected Obama
4.) Family Guy
5.) Great TV in general actually
6.) American football (not quite as good as rugby but still awesome)
7.) You have an astounding amount of places that have amazing natural beauty.
8.) NYC

FAMILY GUY ! OH YEAH

... Sorry got a bit over-excited :/

As for the percentage of religious fanatics, you do reliase that the "bible belt" does not make up a large percentage of the population, much?

Would any American want to swap the bible belt crazies for the crazies Europe has?

Don't ****ing think so.

All the Americans I have met have been lovely, and I'd definitely like to visit. But I couldn't live there, its too right wing and the fervent patriotism strikes me as being a bit too...blind, if you like.
I would never hate someone on the basis of being American or any other nationality for that matter. I do not hate America but there are some things I dislike about the politics and culture, mostly the blind patriotism and general ignorance about the rest of the world which a lot of Americans are guilty of. The sense of superiority of a lot of Americans who bleat on about "The land of the free" and the "best nation in the world" annoys me a bit too...

Oh and it's not a big deal but I've known a lot of Americans and they're all so bloody loud! You can hear them miles off! Why is this??

Mmm I believe our "freedom of speech" contributes to that, but that is just my opinion so please don't think all American's think that way. Where I live there aren't alot of loud people though, more conservative on that note and very friendly.

Yep alright if you are not from GB (and I am, though never really asked to be) but still.

Why would that smarmy ass-licking ponce Blair be any better than his ex-boyfriend Bush?

As for the percentage of religious fanatics, you do reliase that the "bible belt" does not make up a large percentage of the population, much?

Points 2, 3 and 4 are so boring. I am sick of hearing about them. It is all that political "intellectuals" like to debate about to show how much they know everything. And no, I never liked Bush and am not American. But I often wish I was.

Why is he better? Because he didn't **** up his country to the same extent, nor did he **** up the world quite as badly. He was the evil Robin to Bush's evil Batman.

Again, you haven't read the thread properly. I also mentioned the Nation of Islam, Westboro Baptist Church and I think one or two others. Add these all together and you get a large percentage of the population than anywhere else in the civilized world.

Using boring instead of managing actual debate again. They're important to me not because I can use them to showcase my knowledge (which I have no trouble in admitting is limited) but because I feel that they are concerned with solving most of the problems we face.

I know that it is irrational to teach such a thing, but you made it clear that you don't believe we are taught about other countries, which we are. And I agree that there are those who make Americans look completely stupid, but I already explained my reason for starting this post. It is not for me to try and change the views of others on America. Anyhow I believe we've already had a discussion with each other on this matter and I already know you have many legitimate points so I am fine with ending the discussion here if you are fine with it also.
sorry about that.

I didn't realize how much people from different countries absolutely hate and resent the country that I absolutely love until I came across a post in this student website.

I know I am going to get bashed for this post, but I am already aware of that and am fine with that fact since I just want to understand other countries views.

I am American and I do know that our country isn't the best, but I am still proud to be born and raised here. For all of those who dislike me just because I am one, all I have to say is that you should really travel to see our country, to meet people here our different communities and backgrounds, and just to get to know more us instead of bashing us head on. I apologize for my rambling on, but if you were in my position what would you think? say? or even do?

I want to know what you dislike about my country and why? Please don't be too harsh, I am not trying to insult or piss off anyone. I am merely asking the question to understand peoples views and hear different opinions.

The American government makes me sick but then again so does the British government. Most of the American people seem very distracted and careless when it comes to their government. I bet more people voted on American idol than they did actual presidential elections. The only time people seemed interested was when Obama came along and when asked why do you back Obama, "because...........he's different". lol. Most Americans didn't know what he wanted to change but voted for him any way.

But Brits have a tendency to bash any country so I guess don't take it too personally.
List of reasons why i hate America and Americans

Patriotism (I think it's stupid)

They screwed over the Indians to get their land

They used the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima & Nagasaki

George Bush

They're portrayed as either arrogant or ignorant

They have stupid laws

They have psyco kids running riot in schools with guns committing mass murders

Definitely the pick of your ridiculous reasons. Yes, every American alive today was complicit in that. Just like every British person alive today was complicit in the slave trade

Mmm I don't agree with my government anymore than most people, but it is where I live and all I can do is go to school in order to learn more so that it may somehow help me in the future to make this country a better place (or perhaps even the world).
The U.S. is definitely just as guilty.
I apologize for my first post since I didn't take into consideration what some Americans do/say to other countries and didn't make it clear as to what I was trying to say. The post was more intended to bring forth the fact that I dislike the fact that people were automatically making rude comments once they found out I was an American.

Thanks, I try to view everything through a humane perspective. Let me elaborate what I said earlier in this post. So America's economy is in a crisis, money needed to recover the economy is being spent on war - in Iraq and Afghanistan. The American leaders took the nation to war with Iraq, which they suspected to find WMD's, but never did, surprisingly! Imo, this was an illegal war, since USA just wanted to topple Iraq's economy and steal its resources(NOTE: more civilians were killed in this war than the actual opposition). USA also shortly before, took military action against the terrorists in Afghanistan.
Altogether BILLIONS are being spent on these wars (which come from the tax payers money), yet the American government won't spent a penny (or should i say cent lol) on recovering the economy, or if they will, it's not enough - the working class in America is suffering huge consequences.

Remember, in all of this its the American government who is responsible - not it's people. Obama promised 'change', were is your change now Obama? You are just as worse as Bush and we should give him the benefit of the doubt just because of his skin colour.

Quite a lot issues mentions here, feel free to diagree.

What about the 800 billion( I think) Stimulus?

Go to America? No thanks.

America is a vile country, their people think they're the only country that exists. The dumbness in that country is just laughable at times. I don't particular like the American attitudes either, very arrogant like the British!

The only thing that country knows is how to kill innocent women and children across the world. Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Panama, Libya, Vietnam, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Afganistan, Pakistan. I could go on all day!

And you would be wrong on every count. Your calling a country dumb yet you reel off a random list of completely different conflicts that are not connected to each other in any way.

Your really so ignorant that you would compare Nagasaki to Iraq?

Patriotism (I think it's stupid) Im sure the Americans care what you think.

They screwed over the Indians to get their land

They used the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima & Nagasaki You would rather see 100's of thousands of civilians killed in a land invasion?

George Bush Thats democracy for you

They're portrayed as either arrogant or ignorant Stereotypes

They have stupid laws So do most countries.

They have psyco kids running riot in schools with guns committing mass murders Thats hardly the norm for the whole country

Conclusion. Your a jackass
