Yes a non-muslim will have to accept islam fully first before a muslim marries them.

Some scholars have even stressed that a non-muslim should actually understand islam properly first and not just become muslim for just the sole purpose of getting married.

Regarding christians and jews being ahlul-kitaab (people of the book), theres a huge misunderstanding in muslims as all the islamic scholars have come to the final decision that the ahlul-kitaab don't exist anymore.

Well i would say all the islamic scholars but some don't openly talk too deep about it.

The problem is you don't know the real intentions of the non-muslim becoming a muslim and marriage is the biggest issue when conversion is required.But conversion shouldn't be only reason to get married because if the marriage breaks up in the future, does that mean the non-muslim turned muslim turns back to non-believer again?

We have got some freinds and they told us a story about how one of their aunties really wanted to get married to a white guy (she use to work with him in office) and they fell in 'love' in 1980's.Well the white guy promised her that he would convert and all the future kids will be brought up in proper Islamic way.Her family didn't trust one word of his so the aunty decided to run off with him.

Long story short, the white guy did convert to ISlam but once he was married to their aunty he started going back to his non-islamicroutine, drinking, eating pork and most of the standard haraam stuff the non-believers do.Than the aunty came crying back to her muslim family but it was too late as all the bonds were broken when she decided to run off.Now she pretty much has become a non-muslim herself and all the kids are non-muslims with non-islamic names and have Gfs/Bfs and the rest of the BS.The aunty recently met one of the freinds and she literally broke down with all the stress and depression that she has been holding in for soo long.

ISlam is not an easy religion to follow, alot of things have to be sacrificed in order to become a proper practising muslim.So the chances of a non-muslim who is use to the non-islamic lifestyle is very unlikely to commit 100% to Islam.
