Imperial VS Oxford

If one person had a 1st from Imperial in Chemistry, and another had a 1st from Oxford, would there be any real difference in their career prospects? :confused:

Im thinking of Imperials reputation as a scientifically-specialist university here

I'd say both will have similar prospects as they're both top unis.

Imperial College is better than Oxford in pretty much every course that it offers, whether it's medicine, engineering, maths or pure sciences at both undergrad and postgrad. Imperial graudates also have higher starting salaries than oxford graduates.

I would be tempted to think that is because more Imperial graduates stay in London where wages will be higher.

I've been quite disappointed with the teaching quality at Imperial, I'd hope Oxford would be better.

The level of teaching is below par. They have some fantastic lecturers, don't get me wrong, but they also have some pretty poor ones.

In all honesty, it's about level with Reading university for teaching. I'm hoping my 6 month project will make up for it.

That being said, the Royal School Of Mines is an awesome building and the lecture rooms are top notch.

I'm shocked that you're comparing the teaching quality at Imperial with that of Reading University. What are you studying at Imperial, and do others on your course feel the same way? I've got an interview for EEE coming up soon and Imperial is my first choice by miles. The only cons I've heard about Imperial are that it's expensive and that the workload is high.

I'm doing an MSc in Biomedical Engineering. It's a great course, I love it, but it's poorly managed.

When I went to an open day I asked a 3rd physicist and he said the same thing.

I was actually quite shocked, I thought that would be Imperials strong point.

I do't find it surprising at all. A lot of academics only give a **** about their research. Teaching is seen as a burden.

It's a shame, but it's the reality.

Well as far as salaries are concerned, it's an established fact that Imperial graduates earn more than graduates from every other UK university excluding LSE. Mind you, the difference in average starting salaries between IC and LSE graduates is very small.

If everyones going to start analysing teaching here then haaaang on... Reading uni for chemistry is realy quite good. They have some of the best results in the country for chem which considering their tiny department is pretty cool. Also the lecturers are amazing :P
I've got an interview tommorrow (the offer is AAB with A in chem) and Reading is my first choice (im not a compleeete academic faliure either- i study chem, bio, french, english, maths, with predicted A*, A*, A, B, B)

I heard Imperial is so hardcore that biology is seen as a soft subject.

Reading is the best in the country for cybernetics :wink:

You get one guess as to why this is...
I've heard that the Imperial students are so hardcore that the computer science students have never touched a computer.
