Best area in the country to live in? (whilst in your twenties!)

So in the next 6 months I'm going to have to decide whether I want to stay in nottingham, or move elsewhere with my job
I've considered:

Nottingham: Current hometown, Unfortunately due to the climate in the public sector and job cuts alongside my graduating cohort also staying in notts it's likely i'll be moving away.

Bristol: Family live there already, hometown although most school friends have moved away now

London: Expensive for someone on a nurses wage!

My main concerns is that if i move to a new city I wouldn't have the same friendship network you would get at university, and i'd want to be in an environment where it's cheap, and lots going on!

So any advice for those who've moved away from a city they've studied in, or any good cities which fit the criteria?

..I'd also like to make sure the city i'm in does have a good employer and trust record, not a failing trust!

Manchester's buzzing for someone in their twenties- and massive hospitals so you'd have a chance of getting a job. Liverpool ain't bad either.

This, but with more emphasis on Liverpool.
Suffolk! I like it anyway, and if you're nurse you'll be happy because apparently we have the highest life expectancy in the country so you'll mainly just be sending old people peacefully to their graves.
There's not much to do though admittedly.

I moved to Leamington Spa after uni, but I only moved there because I was offered a job. It's not bad but not very exciting. So I can't really recommend it given your situation.

That sounds like a good idea though. I've got some friends in Manchester (they're doctors) and it seems like an awesome place.

Can I ask, moving away, how did you deal with the whole making friends situation?

To be honest I haven't really. I see my friends from home every other weekend or so. Some of them have moved away too, so I go see them in various different places.

Although there are some people from work I go out with sometimes. A couple of them actually work for a different company now so technically I do socialise with people from outside work:tongue:

Of course the problem with my line of work is that there are about 30 men to each woman. So the chances of me meeting girls through work are next to none. I also don't have any other interests that would lead me to meeting women, so my choices are chatting up random strangers (which I'm terrible at) or take up a hobby I don't really like just to meet women. Which I think sounds more pathetic than not meeting any women.

I have the same problem working in a female dominated profession!

I love my friends, but when we graduate we'll all be expected to work unsociable shifts (and they put newly qualifieds on LOADS of nights and weekends!) so it'll be hard to organise something

you have two hometowns O_o

anyway I completely missed Bristol was in your post, weird and if I was going to recommend a good environment, live city, good student city with a good nightlife, transport etc I would have said Nottingham hah

Sooo what about Reading? Seems to fit some of your criteria, good student city, not as expensive, busy or jam packed as a place like London but it's a nice enough city to live in.

Or Birmingham?

The main difference is, men are likely to go after nurses. Women rarely go crazy for game programmers:tongue:
Probably London, though I'm very biased.

Manchester and Leeds as well.

I'd say up north too, Manchester or Liverpool or somewhere in the North West area.
Wouldn't move to anywhere but London tbh :colonhash:
Depends what you like really, personally I'd rather never go anywhere near any of those places unless my life depended on it. No-one can really say without knowing what you like.

Reading and Bristol probably only seem like student cities to students. I went to uni in Bristol so to me that seems like it's nothing but students, but I'm from the Reading area so to me it doesn't seem studenty at all.
