What's your view on the Niq'ab and Hij'ab?

Scroll to see replies

I like to dress up as packman and pretend they're ghosts chasing me.

Or something else racist.

I'm sorry.
The Niqab's more of a cultural thing than an Islamic thing. Islam just wants women to cover their hair and wear moderate clothes that don't expose their curves etc ie Hijab. Niqab's were being worn in arabia long before Islam.

And I'm surrounded by women, and the ones that wear the niqab seem to be cool with it. They're usually like 'meh, if I wanna wear I wanna wear it. saves me time from putting make up on in the morning anyway'

It doesn't bother me. The people who complain are usually the type of people who stand by the phone to report whatever to ofcom whenever they get the opportunity.

I agree with the Hijab and Niqab, however personally, I feel to allow integration, women should really not wear the niqab, but I have nothing against them wearing it.

Of course no woman wants to be objectified but most men, and not just in Britain, treat women like pieces of meat with no respect for them whatsoever particularly when you cheapen yourself by wearing as little as possible. The hijab is a way to avoid this

I have kinda thought about the whole Muslim dress thing as my bf is Muslim and I've always had an interest in religions and cultures.

First, we would have to ask WHY does the religion tell women to wear the hijab or the Niqab.
Without having any great knowledge of Islam, just from some research online, I have realised that women feel safer and protected when they wear it.
I have also seen some videos of Muslims giving speeches talking about it.
They usually claim that women that dress like that are less likely to be raped and more likely to be respected.

I'm sorry, but that is the biggest BULL**** I've heard in my life.
Don't forget that Islam was created by MEN, and is indeed a sexist religion as is Christianity.
Back then, men controlled women and this has always been the case. Women were always considered inferior, and it's only in the western society now that they're starting to be considered the same as men.

I personally see the Niqab and the Hijab as a sign of oppression, control and patriarchy.

The Hijab does NOT make you gain any more respect. Whatever you wear will not make you "a piece of meat" in the eyes of a decent, respectful man. If a man doesn't respect you, it's his problem, not yours. I'm not gonna change the way I dress because men are dicks.

And it's about time people stopped criticizing women about the way they dress!

Also, something final: Most of the time the wearing of the hijab or the niqab is not a girl's own choice.
The brainwashing about the muslim dress doesn't only come from family, it comes from religion and the Asian culture.
Isn't it true that the Asian culture preaches the importance of family and how you should put your family's wishes before yourself?
Not a lot of things are really your "own" choice when it comes to Islam and the Asian culture.

I am not judging anyone, merely going on experience. To not go on that would make me nieve.

Seriously, why do you think women are looked down on in the UK of all places?

However, if you are a woman and don't want to be treated like a piece of meat then :
a) stop hanging around dicks
b) get a personality. Why most girls are treated as meat is because they have not much going on upstairs. A prime example is girls and general knowledge and their hobbies. most of the time girls have neither making them extremely boring people.

The hijab is an extreme way to force the person to wear decent clothes rather then having fashion sense and self control. You could dress well, attractively, and look sophisticated if you put the time into it.

From the looks of things, the hijab is no more the fat fighters for people's morals rather then weight. If you truly had self control you would be able to get all the benefits of the hijab without having to wear it.

If you actually read the post I said women are treated like meat everywhere.

I agree with what you say about dressing decent and most women here do dress decent and have self-respect for themselves but that doesn't stop them being judged for their looks first. How many times have you hit on decent dressed girls with the intention of getting them into bed and how many of those were wearing hijab?

By the way you spelt 'naive' wrong again
I'd have no problem with it... if men wore it too. It's degrading and oppressive towards women and is a huge obstacle in the path of equality.

If you dress like a tart a decent respectful man will generally not want to be in a long term relationship with you so technically is does matter how you dress in the eyes of 'decent respectful man'

Correct me if i'm wrong but I thought women who dress with their boobs hanging out do so to get the attention of men? Surely its not for the benefit of other women is it or am I missing something...

Who I or you know is irrelevant, and living how you want is not always good for everyone else around you.
To believe so is to be very nieve.

The fact that these immigrants do not want to integrate into British society is only going to lead to problems, thus they should rethink why they came to Britain in the first place.

Why do you wear it?
How has it helped you?
How has it been "liberating"?

I am not and you're not aware of the majority of the British citizens, how can you form a stance as to what traditions are upheld. Individuals are choosing the way they live.

Not all immigrants are Muslim, not all of them wear the niq'ab even if they are Muslim immigrants, there are British born Muslims who also wear this item.

So if Zara chooses to wear the niq'ab in public out of her own free-will, what will you choose to do about it?

How many countries have you been to?
To say they are treated like meat everywhere is one of the most ludicrous statements I have ever heard.

Everyone is judged on their looks. If all you know about someone is how they look then it is all you have to base an opinion on that person. You will be judged on how you look, especially for wearing a hijab.
As for hitting on decent looking girls, I do not try to 'hit on' girls but rather I try get to know them first, and as for one night stands, I too do not do that either, which is my point about the hijab. If I was a woman then I would be following all the customs of wearing one, yet through my only self control rather then having to wear something to remind myself of how I feel.
Though for guys who do hit on girls just to get them into bed, as I said before, you also have to look at the girl. If she is just something good to look at, then she will be treated like an object.
But if she has a good personality, then the guy will most likely try to pursue a relationship and show her respect, yet as most girls lack this mystical thing called a personality due to many have no hobbies, interests, or any general knowledge, many guys would not waste the time getting to know someone that boring.

Being aware or not aware of the majority of British citizens does not change anything.
It is very easy to form a stance on what traditions should be upheld if you know anything about British culture or history...... Although granted that some traditions are dying out leaving a void and being replaced with crap from British people eg. bad parenting, which I do not want, I also do not want extreme traditions from other cultures replacing this void that has been made.

I know that not all immigrants are Muslim etc, but I do know that the minority wear the hijab, and that is the minority of Muslims and even in Muslim states traditions are changing. This begs the question of why did you come here (or your parents etc as the vast majority of those wearing the hijab are immigrants by one or two generations) to preserve parts of your culture rather then embracing the culture you have moved to? If I moved to a different country then I would try to integrate as best possible because I would prefer that culture - hence why I moved there.

As for what am I going to do about it............what is this, the playground or some drunken brawl? Someone asked what is my opinion and I answered. To get so provocative is quite alarming and shows that you are not comfortable with people holding a negative opinion about certain customs. Again, if that is the case then one should look at why they are in this country.

Well, you are generalising here

I do not find that dressing sexy makes men disrespect me.
In fact, if a man judges whether he wants to be in a long term relationship with me or not by the way I dress, I would not want to be with that man.

Why would men avoid being in a long term relationship with a girl that dresses sexy anyway?
because men (not all, I don't want to generalise here) want to control women, have them all to themselves and don't want any other men to ever look at them ever!

I do agree that women dress like that to get attention from men. What is wrong with that though? Getting attention from men does not mean a woman will be treated as a piece of meat.

I admit, I love it when men look at me when I wear something sexy. I feel beautiful, I feel sexy and confident.
But I wouldn't let men disrespect me and treat me as a piece of meat.

Think of it the other way as well.
Think of men dressing sexy.
Have you ever heard of people calling them tarts or accusing them of seeking attention??

And honestly, who doesn't just looooove attention?
I don't think if there's anything more satisfying than telling a guy to eff off because you have a bf

Part of British culture is to go out, get drunk and pull girls in pubs, bars and nightclubs and to be honest with you I dont think many guys care about personality then

So if you would ban the hijab what would your reasons be? As far as I can see it causes no harm to society, doesn't cause offence to people and actually the virgin Mary covered her head and the bible talks about head uncoverings. Since Britain is mainly Christian it would be very un-British to ban it then
Firstly, speaking from a religious point of view, the hijab/niqab are not associated with Islam, they are merely a cultural piece of clothing. If the hijabs are to be taken as a religious obligation, as some people take them to be then we can argue the case that, yes, women are being oppressed. Those who wear the hijabs/niqabs out of the beleif that they have to, in order to please their husbands, or adhere to the teaching which they believe to be in their relgion, then, simply put, they need to go back to their religious books and realise that in fact, nowehere are they commanded to be wearing such clothings.

So realise that, wearing the hijab/niqab is no more than culture and tradtition, anyone who believes otherwise needs to understand that the source which they believe contains this commandment, is the very source that calls for equality between men and women.

Vote no for Hijabs.

This is where the empowerment thing comes in with hijab. It's pretty pathetic that you need a man's attention to feel beautiful and confident especially coming from someone whose just criticised Islam for being anti-feminist

Technically you are being treated like a piece of meat when you've got your boobs hanging out and a man is giving you loads of attention

Also yes I have heard of men dressing sexy be accused of seeking attention. I think the term man-whore is very appropriate here

Yes, I do practise Islam in here but I believe my actions never alienate other people from me, despite the fact I live in an area where majority is non-Muslim.

People should respect each other, no matter what their religion or belief is. I don't go around and start preaching people and forcing them to change their views.

So please :hand:

So then as a practising Muslim you should be aware of how important it is for a woman to be modest and cover herself up? Im sure God knew what he was talking about when he told the women to cover their faces! Just because you don't fit in sometimes or feel 'alienated' does that mean as muslims we should change the way we dress and act? Why change yourself just to fit in to the majority? & I don't even understand why you think the hijab alienates women.. there are some people who are fine about it and socialising with them is no problem what so ever and others who can't see beyond the whole bubble of 'oppression' and what not..
My view on it? I love it. Other people's views on it? Why should they even have one? It's not affecting them in any way, shape or form, so they might as well just shut up and let Muslim women be.

I don't need a man's attention in order to feel beautiful, that's not what I said.
I would still feel sexy and beautiful with no male attention, but getting the male attention makes you feel wanted too.
As long as it doesn't get annoying...lol

I really don't see how you are being treated like a piece of meat if you dress sexy.
(I'm guessing "having your boobs out" means showing cleavage).

Could you say the same thing with wearing make up or a nice looking top or a nice looking hijab???
I'm sure men could get turned on by painted toenails, would we have to keep them covered all the time so we don't get treated as pieces of meat??

I saw a girl wearing a Niq'ab the other day, and she was holding an iPhone!

You couldn't make it up. Doesn't she realise that according to the Quran, the wealthy will burn in hell for eternity? Clearly if you can afford an iPhone, you are wealthy. The price is about a year's wages for an Afghani farmer.
I can't say I'm a massive fan, but certainly I oppose people who say they should be outlawed.

Although if you think a 'belief' that you shouldn't take your headscarf off should absolve you from national security checks, IMO you shouldn't be travelling. How on earth is airport security, e.g., supposed to check who you are if all they can see is eyes?
I happen to believe that metal detectors are sacrilegious. Guess what? I still have to walk through them.

I don't think the niqab should be allowed in public just as I don't think people should be allowed to walk around in public wearing a balaclava or a hockey mask, however the hijab is ok.

But they do both offend me greatly. They are in effect saying they think all white men are sexual predators and will rape them for not covering their face completely.

But they have nothing to do with white men specifically. If that was the case then the hijab/niqab would not be worn in Arab countries :s-smilie:

I see nothing wrong with wearing Hijab, I was talking about Niqab.

Would you ever see these women socialising with non-Muslims? :curious: Never.

That's what I meant when I said it alienates them from mixing with people from other races/religions. I'm sorry, I just don't believe in "stick to your kind" notion.
