What's your view on the Niq'ab and Hij'ab?

I saw a girl wearing a Niq'ab the other day, and she was holding an iPhone!

You couldn't make it up. Doesn't she realise that according to the Quran, the wealthy will burn in hell for eternity? Clearly if you can afford an iPhone, you are wealthy. The price is about a year's wages for an Afghani farmer.

Yeah, don't you just hate those wealthy bastards, with their iPhones and their internet access?
If they had any morals they'd send all their wealth to afghanistan!

Part of British culture is to go out, get drunk and pull girls in pubs, bars and nightclubs and to be honest with you I dont think many guys care about personality then

So if you would ban the hijab what would your reasons be? As far as I can see it causes no harm to society, doesn't cause offence to people and actually the virgin Mary covered her head and the bible talks about head uncoverings. Since Britain is mainly Christian it would be very un-British to ban it then

That is rough, 'new' British society. The working class have always done that, they simply get more attention now. The other classes do not do this and tend to have more decency. I suggest you start meeting other people.

I would not ban the hijab as people in Britain only stopped wearing head scarves after the 50's.
However I would actively discourage it as it does make a large cultural rift and as a result increase cultural tension. If you look at the Chinese community in the UK, they have always integrated with ease because they have never opposed or criticized the culture they were moving into. The hijab or Niq'ab on the other hand does the opposite as is a clear statement of cultural disapproval which is emphasized as not all Muslims wear it, and seeing that the Muslim community is 'new' to this country, the last thing people want to do is to try to set them apart.

I have kinda thought about the whole Muslim dress thing as my bf is Muslim and I've always had an interest in religions and cultures.

First, we would have to ask WHY does the religion tell women to wear the hijab or the Niqab.
Without having any great knowledge of Islam, just from some research online, I have realised that women feel safer and protected when they wear it.
I have also seen some videos of Muslims giving speeches talking about it.
They usually claim that women that dress like that are less likely to be raped and more likely to be respected.

I'm sorry, but that is the biggest BULL**** I've heard in my life.
Don't forget that Islam was created by MEN, and is indeed a sexist religion as is Christianity.
Back then, men controlled women and this has always been the case. Women were always considered inferior, and it's only in the western society now that they're starting to be considered the same as men.

I personally see the Niqab and the Hijab as a sign of oppression, control and patriarchy.

The Hijab does NOT make you gain any more respect. Whatever you wear will not make you "a piece of meat" in the eyes of a decent, respectful man. If a man doesn't respect you, it's his problem, not yours. I'm not gonna change the way I dress because men are dicks.

And it's about time people stopped criticizing women about the way they dress!

Also, something final: Most of the time the wearing of the hijab or the niqab is not a girl's own choice.
The brainwashing about the muslim dress doesn't only come from family, it comes from religion and the Asian culture.
Isn't it true that the Asian culture preaches the importance of family and how you should put your family's wishes before yourself?
Not a lot of things are really your "own" choice when it comes to Islam and the Asian culture.

I don't quite understand why culture and religion is being mixed here? Seriously, big difference between Asian culture and Islam.. don't even go there!

You claim that only in western societies are women considered equal? Over 1400 years in Arabia were women given the rights to:
1. Vote
2. Own business
3 Run their own business
4. Marry out of their own choice
5. Get inheritance
6. Work
7. Whatever they earn, they had the right to keep it for themselves and unlike in Britain, women did not need to give this money to their husbands or whatever.

Its actually quite sad knowing that only about 100 years ago in Britain did women start gaining some rights, when Islam gave all these rights to women over 1400 years ago.. so no Britain is very very behind

I don't see what you guys don't understand. An advert about some new car and next thing, there is a picture of an almost naked woman posing on the car.. now how in any way is this respecting women? They portrayed as sex symbols in the western society.. im not being biased.. I was a great fan of alot of music.. but it disgusts me the way women are portrayed.. its horrible. Why do you people not ever pick up on this? They just plonked on random photos, videos all dressed up.. like a piece of decoration.. just there to look good..

Its God who orders women to cover them selves up.. not their men. Yes it may seem a little strict and difficult at times.. but you live in this country don't you? Why do you follow the rules and make sure you don't break the law? Same way, Its Gods command so who are we to question. & for those that do question, there are plenty of reasons for why women are asked to cover up. For many women, yes they abused by their husbands, fathers etc but what's that got to do with Islam? Look at the religion, not the people..

I see nothing wrong with wearing Hijab, I was talking about Niqab.

Would you ever see these women socialising with non-Muslims? :curious: Never.

That's what I meant when I said it alienates them from mixing with people from other races/religions. I'm sorry, I just don't believe in "stick to your kind" notion.

Thats the way they dress, thats their problem. You don't need to cover yourself up with that many layers.. women choose to. I have friends who wear it, they cover their face well and they can socialise well too.

This isn't an issue of morals, it's an issue of scriptural fact. The Quran is very clear on personal wealth, and I find it very odd indeed that people feel the need to dress modestly because the Quran instructs them to, yet at the same time indulge themselves in consumerist nonsense such as Iphones and whatever else. It's a massive contradiction. If the Quran is the word of god (and of course I do not believe it is), then 99% of Muslims in the UK will burn in hellfire for eternity because of their attachment to wealth. It's ridiculous.

Hello,

I've seen an increasing amount of girls starting to wear the Niq'ab and Hij'ab.

What are your views on it? What do you think? Should they wear it in the United Kingdom? If not then why?

Is this extreme?

Don't really know to be honest seeing as I've never worn one lol.

Seriously; no I don't have a problem with it. I personally wouldn't want to wear one if I was a muslim woman mainly because I feel we should be happy with who we are and in ourselves and we can only do that by showing are face to the world. Ain't it great when a passer by just looks and smiles at you?

I don't have problem nor do I feel threatened by it. Those that say they do are just trying to hide their innate and subconscious racism/ignorance/xenophobia.

I mean come on do you honestly find a headscarf or burkha more intimidating than say somebody with a skin head with tattooes and piercings all over their body or wearing a BNP T-shirt or a provocative far-right slogan on their shirt?

Be realistic people. If you're going to ban burkhas then let's ban balaclavas and hats and tattooes and piercings etc.

Besides in clinical settings, banks, airport security etc, burkhas have to be removed albeit this is done in a discrete and respectful manner.

I don't need a man's attention in order to feel beautiful, that's not what I said.
I would still feel sexy and beautiful with no male attention, but getting the male attention makes you feel wanted too.
As long as it doesn't get annoying...lol

I really don't see how you are being treated like a piece of meat if you dress sexy.
(I'm guessing "having your boobs out" means showing cleavage).

Could you say the same thing with wearing make up or a nice looking top or a nice looking hijab???
I'm sure men could get turned on by painted toenails, would we have to keep them covered all the time so we don't get treated as pieces of meat??

Im not saying women can't look nice, I'm just saying this way of life you're describing is controlled by men. Women dress a certain way to please men and I get why you'd want to that for your husband but if thats what makes you happy then....

I take a very feminist approach to life and it's insulting when someone who doesn't know me tells me that by wearing hijab I am being oppressed and forced to wear it by a man.

Maybe you should read what the quran says about women rather than what asian culture tell you because I will be the first to admit that asian culture is very different from Islam

Well, I am not aware of whatever happens in Arabia, so I can't comment on that.

I do know that women are being used as sex objects by the media and tbh that angers me as well sometimes, but men are being used like that too.
If we are to be disgusted by the way women are being portrayed, I think we should be disgusted by the way men are being portrayed as well.

Here, we will just have agree to disagree because I do not believe in any God. So, in my view, it was men that came up with the rule of covering up and they did in order to control their own women, so that no other man could desire them.

You said that they are many reasons when you question, so what are the reasons for wearing the hijab?? I would be very interested to hear them, because until now, I have never heard a good reason for it.

ok, if I had to look at the religion, I know it wouldn't be that bad and I know that there's no mention of the niqab, but the hijab is still sexist in my view.

Yep.. the photograph you showed me is a very traditional way of wearing it. In britain women don't wear it that heavy.. but what they need to cover.. its covered.

"Give the kinsman his due, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and squander not (your wealth) in wantonness. Lo! the squanderers were ever brothers of the devils, and the devil was ever an ingrate to his Lord" (Quran 17:26-27).

Amr ibn Shuaib, on his father's authority said that his grandfather related that the Prophet said: When you eat, drink, give charity and wear clothes, let no extravagance or pride be mixed up with what you do. (Ibn Maja, Nasai).

The Bible strikes a similar tone, even going as far as to explicitly say that rich people cannot enter heaven.

IMO your definition of wealth is a little harsh. A lot of things are impossible to get by without these days - people need to be able to check emails on the go etc. It's just a phone really.
When they are rolling in silk and gold coins in incense filled rooms, being fanned by servants and the like, you may have a point. Until then, it's pretty silly to interpret a warning against extravagance as 'the only reasonable level at which you may live is that of the very poorest person in the world (the afghani famer?)'.

As I said, I don't have a great knowledge of Islam, and I do understand that many verses can be taken out of context but I have read verses that actually tell women to cover up, right?

I'm not saying you are being forced to wear by a man. But it was a man that came up with the rule of covering up.
What's a way to keep other men from looking at my woman?
Cover her up so other men can't look at her!
Doesn't it make perfect sense?

I find that women tend to dress like that to feel good about themselves, to fit in and yeah to get attention. Let's face it, the majority of women are insecure and yes I do blame modern society and the media for that.
They need to learn to love themselves, not hide themselves.

It's condemning the vanity and the arrogance which comes with having lots of money, people who like to keep their wealth to themselves and not give to charity.

You can be rich, humble and generous at the same time.

Your example of having an iphone is quite judgemental and rather ridiculous , sir.

Yes men are, but I think the situation of women is worse. I think it looks a million times worse how some woman is just put on camera, literally naked and doing.. stuff! What's the need? Its actually quite horrid!

The reasons for wearing it.. there are loads and I do know some of the reasons in my head but I want to answer that question properly to you so i'll get back to you in a while with a proper answer

You don't believe in God.. fair enough ok. But you have to understand many people did and do and over a 1000 years ago when it was revealed in the Quran about covering up, people saw it very important obeying Gods orders and since then women have covered them selves up. You think its men trying to control women only because you don't believe in God.. but i think you should think outside what you think and think at a wider level.

You cannot compare compare Islam and the hijab to the Chinese community since a quite a few Chinese people are muslim and wear the hijab.

You are underestimating people if you think a headscarf can make such a big difference to cultural relations. The hijab is not a statement of cultural disapproval it is religious expression. You are confusing religion and culture. People in muslim countries like Pakistan are also allowed freedom of religious expression shown by the large number of churches and people wearing crosses there are, the only difference is that the hijab is alot more noticeable than crosses, skull caps or turbans.
