Why is King's College ignored on TSR?

Scroll to see replies

Well no - LSE and KCL are in exactly the same area of town (did you even read my post?! )

Also, we're talking about a city 30 miles across east to west - they're all central. Saying one is more central is much of a muchness really.

It doesn't really have a specialism - LSE is a social science university, Imperial is a science university, UCL is a humanities university ... but KCL is just a general all-round good uni.

Aaaaah KCL! Strand poly! *spits*

Disclaimer: I'm not being serious, call it competition from one uni to another (though in fairness we don't like your rowers very much currently).

The same area, yes, but my point still stands. You've put an argument based on perspective/opinion up against an argument of measurement.

It's marketing, but it's a pretty solid claim (wait 30 seconds):

Who the hell cares that KCL is ignored on TSR?

Point is, it's still a top uni. Unfortunate to be situated in a city with many other great unis like Imp, UCL and LSE. Locationwise it's fantastic (like LSE), and as an allround uni, it is quality!

Arguably UCL is also a general all-round good uni though - for example, from a purely objective point of view, the medical school is certainly strong.

Because a university has a strong school, that doesn't mean it changes the whole reputation. A university might have a very well-regarded geography course, but if most of the courses they offer are biological science and it's where all their funding goes, they'd be known as a biological science university.

A mile, especially in central london, is "much".

You're right of course, but I don't think you realise quite how well grounded in the sciences UCL is!

It's research income was £248,640,000 in '08-'09 - the fourth highest after Oxford, Imperial and Cambridge respectively. As evidenced by recent protest, arts subjects alone do not a large research grant make!

UCL Partners (Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust (GOSH); Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust; and UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) is one of only 5 Academic Health Science Centres in the UK, and is the largest such organisation in Europe.

It is anchoring a £600 million UK Centre for Medical Research, which will be the largest biomedical research facility in Europe.

UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre is one of only 5 set up by the NHS in England, and produces more highly cited publications than any other UK institution.

Much of this comes under the remit of the (very large) medical school. It's an inherently different unit to, say, geography (using your example) - at Imperial, a quarter of all students fall under the School of Medicine umbrella.

I could accompany all the above with a barrage of stats and facts, but I'm sure you get the general idea

I've no higher education background in the arts to speak of, but I'm aware that arts teaching & research at UCL is also of an objectively high standard. So, it is fair to conclude that UCL is as much a science university as it is an arts university, no? :holmes:

But to go back on topic, I wasn't aware that KCL was ignored on TSR particularly :dontknow: certainly not in the medicine forum anyway

Back.

This just became fun:

KCL alone, should be lower. I'd love to know how you came to this conclusion. You just picked up the shovel.

I gave the reasons why I think it should be ranked lower. Read what I wrote; the explanation is unequivocally embedded in the comments.

I'd hate to go there.

In fact, I'd hate to go to a university in a city/town with two universities, which is the 'second' uni in the place.

Like Hallam, Bath Spa, Oxford Brooks, Anglia Ruskin or Northumbria.

You'd always feel second to Sheffield, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge or Newcastle at those places, IMO. Especially if you met a boy/girl on a night out and one of you went to the ex-poly and one to the redbrick.

Awkward. That's just my stance on it though, I'm weird and socially retarded.

I agree. I wouldn't make judgements about fellow students if I went to one of those universities, but I'd be inclined to lie and say I went to the 'good' one  Not Hallam, KCL, Brooks, Ruskin etc.
...Has gone downhill.

We can agree to disagree

Before I disappear from your life, I just want to reemphasise just how close KCL and LSE are, because I don't think you realise (please correct me if I'm wrong!). And also because I'm sad like that :awesome:

(KCL is the brown blob on the Strand)

There's something like 61 female students to every 39 males at KCL.

No decent pussy?

I agree, I wouldn't make any judgements either.

There are plenty of very clever people who don't make their first choice for whatever reason, and there are plenty of clever people who choose a non-traditional university for whatever reason.

I would find it awkward though because not everyone shares that mindset. I imagine that in university cities and towns like York, Bath, Newcastle and Sheffield, some of the students at the big university look down on the ones at the smaller ones.

Part of the reason why I chose the universities I did. The only place on my UCAS with two unis is York and I've picked the UOY and not YSJ.

I see what you did there with the KCL mind!

IMO, KCL, UCL, ICL, LSE are all fantastic institutions and I would be very happy to say I attended one of them. Unfortunately none offer my chosen course and the only one that offers my subject is LSE, which despite how good I may be at sociology, I'll never have the well-rounded A-Levels, nor the fantastic GCSEs that LSE ask for.

Would love to go there mind, incredible place.

Shup if you haven't been to King's. It's lovely and as good a uni as any other. It's not talked about because they have hardly given any offers/interviews out yet.

Most people I know say it's the worst university in the world.

Keep telling yourself that  I'm not saying KCL isn't good, but you can't say "it's as good as any other" just because you like it.
