Do you think it would be stupid..?

Do you think it would be stupid to go to university in your home city and not live at home? I'm asking this because I want to move out when I go to university and I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool but I could stay at home rent free, would it be stupid for me to live in the halls? :smile:

If you can afford it, why not. But just think about the money you would save. I'm sure you could make friends that live in halls and sponge of their experience....although saying that, it's nothing special.

That is the only problem really, money.

I just think if I live at home will I miss out on the full university experience? (Whatever that is)

Yes and No.

Yes; in light of the recent extortionate increases in fees, it would only go to double your debt. But if you can afford it, then why not?
No; as they say its good to live out, socialising opportunities, part of the university experience etc.

You can always live back at home in second year onwards. Might as well take the opportunity and get the full experience first year!

More than anything it's developing the independence of living away from home imo.

live in halls for freshers then go to your councillor dude and say its so expensive and you are better off living at home

Hmm, well don't choose the most expensive hall? I think living in halls was more than half of the uni experience, it's much easier going out, hanging with people, just popping over to new friends, cooking together and getting to know people etc. You get different groups of friends in halls and in lectures.

Living at home, you'd only really see new people during lectures and you'd have to make more effort getting to know more people. I think it would be worth the money.. :smile:

So a good idea would be to live in the halls first year, make some friends and enjoy it and then move back home for the next two years? Well if I stayed in Liverpool the course I will be doing a sandwich course so my third year would be out on the job anyway.

It seems a bit pointless if you're that close, but weigh it up against what else you want.

You could live in halls in the first year, then move back home subsequently?

It will be much more expensive for you but if you can afford it, definitely go for it. It'll probably be worth it.

It is just one of the possibilities really. I'm not really sure at the moment if i want to stay in Liverpool but that is the course that looks most appealing, but I don't want to live at home.

I think maybe if I did go to John Moores it would probably be best to move out despite the costs.

I would live at home if I were you. (This is coming from someone who has been and done the whole university halls thing, and the rest.)

Obviously if you got a uni far from your home, you need to live near uni.

If you are going to uni in Liverpool though, and already live in Liverpool, I would save your money and stay at home.

I think live in halls for the first year and then if it seems wasteful/too expensive, go home. You don't want to end up sitting at home in your entire first year and meeting no-one, that'd be rubbish

I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing (I live in Liverpool too).

I want to move out but again, not sure whether saving money would be a better option!

(Having said that I'll be getting a student house with friends, it's actually a lot cheaper than halls with combined rent xD)

If you want to go out for the night life and meet lots of people, and you feel you are ready to move out then i would totally go for it! Take the chance and go for it! Its scary at first, but everyone is in the same boat so you will make new friends quickly and depending on how much free time you get, getting a part-time job would be helpfull for the money situation if you want one.

But then it is nice to have home comforts as well and be with the people who know you the best!!! And having them not far away, if you decide to live in halls means you can visit them whenever you want and get free meals!!!

I only live 40 minutes away from home, but I stayed in halls :biggrin:

So glad I did, would NOT wanted to have missed out on it! it was so much fun and i met some of my best friends, and my boyfriend, and share a house with them now i'm in my second year and absolutely love it :smile:

but yeah it is expensive :P

but also i didn't have the option of staying at home i was told i had to move out at 18 :P
