Is it anxiety, Costochondritis, or something else????

Hi all,

So earlier this afternoon whilst watching a movie, I was minding my own business, playing on my phone. Whilst this I endured the weirdest sensation in the centtre of my ches, felt like a flutter and then it went, but it left me with the feeling of 'woah'. That episode I never experienced before, which left me feeling funny, dizzy and slightly confused. I booked an appointment for a Dr, but my dad called an ambulance instead. Ambulance people arrived and i told them all that had been going on. I had ECG, which was fine, but then I had another one which appeared fine until ambulance lady noticed something slightly questionable. So I was taken into A&E.

Got there and I had another ECG, which was fine, and a blood test checking the oxygen levels, which was fine. After the Dr checked my sternum, which aggravated it slightly, which hinted to the Dr = Costochondritis! she predicted another 2/3months of this dreadful annoyance.

Now I'm currently sat down, resting and I can still feel this niggling pain in my chest and the feeling of not right. Now I'm questioning could this be anxiety?? Or is there something going on that the Drs (I've seen several over 8wks) haven't sussed out yet??? I'm absolutely petrified, scared and frightened so looking for something that might help me.

I know TSR is not a place for diagnosis, just after some ideas really.

Sounds like gas to me.

Excercise and burp/fart it out.
Trust me, Ive had costochondritis since April, it really isnt nice, apparently it goes quickly with some people, a couple of weeks but ive had for nigh on 6 months now, its not as bad as it was though

OP avoid anything too strenous like picking up heavy stuff

Well I've had a lot of gas via my bum for 8weeks but I'm burping a lil bit via my chest, but it's not a lot. I've had a gastric tablet from my GP - not done anything, had anti inflammatories, done nothing, vitamin supplements, nothing. I'm running out of ideas :-(.

All I want is the pain to go and a good nights sleep :-(.

Can I ask you have you endured the fluttering sensations?? Because the Dr in a&e said it's connected, the nerve endings around the ribcage/chest wall :-/.

What did your costo. first start to feel like?? Also what do you do to ease the pain/settle the pain??

Hah wow even your doctor thought the same lol.

Maybe there's hope for me after all.

but I reccommend excercise. That's what I do when I have such unexplained pains/feelings

In most cases the pain fades and its not an issue - I'm still alive. I haven't actually been to the GP in like 2 years now.

definately, I remember that more than any other symptom, been to hospital countless times

it started off ridiculously painful, like hard to breathe painful, but then I learnt to sort of live with it, I used to use a lot of heat rub and that def. had a positive effect and not lifting heavy stuff and gentle physio to ease the pain, but really ibuprofen should sort it out since it is an inflammatory problem, and some paracetemol

:-(, but I'm fed up of the pain. 8 weeks of not much sleep is taking it's toll on me now :-(. Back and forth to GP/A&E because of the chest pain and various diagnosis :-(. That's why I was thinking perhaps this is all anxiety and Costo. on top. But it's scary and frightening. :-( I want to exercise, go back to dancing but I'm scared it'll aggravate the chest.

Id never been to my GP in about 3 years or something before this summer, after that its been literally at least twice a week, imagine that just before you summer exams

by being anxious, your unconsiously causing yourself to breathe deeper and harder because your worried about a little flutter in your chest, you use the muscles in your chest to breathe and since the cartilage there is already inflamed you are simply aggravating the problem, so best thing to do is not to panic or try and distract yourself

did the injury begin with dancing?

No pain - no gain.

Stop being lazy and get on with it.

And stop spending time with Dr. Internet - if the problem persists i'm sure they'll give you a scan or what ever, they're professionals have faith, but don't be afraid to express your concerns.

Aww soo glad you've said that because I was beginning to think I'm looney n it's serious. Did you also find that your breathing was compensated by it as well?? I've developed a dry cough because of it. When I breathe in, it's not painful much anymore, I use to get sharp pain on breathing in.

What heat rub did you use??? I've not lifted anything heavy as of late, not even done the dishes because I want to try and get it better. The Dr said when she pressed on my sternum she said it's tight and she could feel slight crunching, which is what hinted to her of Costo.

My Dr told me to take anti inflammatories for something else he thought it was, but I have since stopped taking them as he wanted me to take a gastric tablet. But that hasn't worked, so I think I'll go back to anti inflammatories and see how I get on. Can't take paracetamol on it's own but co codemal seems to work.

I was originally investigated for a suspected DVT. That has been completely ruled out, but it was then the chest issue started. Numerous blood tests found high liver enzymes, so I was grilled by Drs for a drink problem . The enzymes kept going up and up, another blood test highlighted Epstein Barr Virus, indicating recent, not new. Xmas eve my Dr rung to tell me my liver enzymes have returned to normal.
Whilst I was dancing I was fine. Since coming down poorly, I've stopped dancing in the bid to get better because I don't want to aggravate anything.

its one of the more common conditions that affect people of our age group (assuming you are of course  ) and yes I was coughing all over the place, but mine certainy wasnt dry, I had to have an inhaler with me

I used to use a lot vapour rub, still do but nowhere near as much

I imjured myself, I think, after some excersize and with the antiflammatories apparently its best to keep them at a minimum, I was always quoted a week but please dont take my word for it, keep your GP updated with whats going on

do you have irritable bowel or something?

 I can see why you were anxious thats quite a list! but Ye, I reckon excersize is good but def. dont overdo it, itll just slow the healing process

How can I exercise when I'm not 100%??

I've had 2 chest x rays - both clear. Given 2 rounds of antibiotics to treat a chest infection I apparently had. Given gastric tablets to help, not worked and anti inflammatories to treat something else Drs thought I may have.

I'm tired from how long this has been going on for and I desperately want to get better. I'm seein Dr on Tuesday, it was booked before Xmas, Dr wanted to see me then, follow up. So will express my concerns then. I've also been referred to Cardiologist and gastric specialist, but got to wait another 8/9weeks for that.

I'm 24. My mum had it a few weeks ago when she had the flu really bad, and she said she didn't get it as bad as me but the things I was explaining to her sound exactly the same. Well my cough is sometimes dry, but I do bring up a lot of crap :-/.

When the pain was real bad, mum was using the vapour rub on me. But then she stopped and said I'm being too reliant on it. :-/ **I shall be digging it out again**

I don't have IBS although I'm beginning to question it as my stomach lately gurgles a lot at night, I can hear it churning and making a lot of noise and I'm passing a lot of wind. I find myself lately visiting the toilet a lot more and when I take paracetamol on it's own I get severe stomach ache. I had bad stomach 10weeks ago, to the point I was doubled up in pain and had to drink herbal tea to settle my stomach.
