Oh yeh, does anyone know whether first years can take part in formula student or is it just third and forth years that are likely to take part like in a lot of other unis?

Hi, I have recieved an offer from Imperial to study physics next year, and soon enough I will have a very difficult decision to make. I love the buildings, the location and the atmosphere of Imperial , but the major worry that I have is the accomodation.

From what Ive heard, the first year is in halls which is all good. In the information pack I got it said that some rooms are individual and some are shared. How high is the demand for each type of room and what is it like sharing a room with someone you have never met before?

After first year, you get thrown out of halls and have to find your own place to live. Obviously student accomodation is never going to be that amazing, but the demand for housing in London is extremely high anyway, so how hard is it to get cheap student accomodation that is nice? (by nice I mean suitable for a human to live in)
Also, as most student houses are probably most likely to be a bus/tube ride away from Imperial, does this affect your social life in the college? i.e. do you ever find yourself not being bothered to travel across London to get to there?
And also, how easy is it to make friends in first year that you can then go on to share accomodation with in second/third year?

And another thing, totally unrelated to accomodation. The workload at Imperial: is it really that bad?

Sorry for all the questions, any answers would be much appreciated!

I got an offer from them too, but I didn't get an information pack :s-smilie: ?!

Sorry can I ask, what course have you applied for?

Pester them! or if you want past papers I know the VP of chem soc. I can get you the goods :p:

I managed to obtain a few from Dad (although I would appreciate some Medicinal biology/chemistry ancillary past papers!). It's bizarre that Imperial don't just provide them. I sometimes get the impression they're not really 'on our side'.

I doubt you would be! I must admit I don't know many first year medics I am a terrible parent (life as a single parent is hard *sniff* :p:)

I had the same thing with the conservatives, but didn't get a single email after singing up to the mailing list. The libertarian society as far as I can ascertain exists in name only...

Oh I don't have political friends is all probably. Medics are fairly socialist though, you would be surprised... (I was called evil for saying I wouldn't be willing to take a significant pay cut for the good of the NHS...)

I need the odd political chat :p: Eastide on wednesdays eh...I have dance at 8.30 in EEE on a wednesday so could organise something at some point...

What year of medicine are you in? Is there a shortage of willing medic parents? I'm sure my medic chums would be keen to meet you.

When I went over to the ConSoc table at Freshers' Fair I quipped, in a friendly way, that there were only two names on the sign-up sheet, and the girl snapped "That's the second sheet!". If she's the same person who I sent the email to, then that probably explains why I got no reply. I think her name's Peugeot or Renault or something.

It would seem that LiberSoc's not the only one to exist in name only. I joined the History society, got sent an email about a trip to the Imperial War Museum with the meeting place etc, turned up... and apart from a few other punters who also turned up there was absolutely no sign of the History Society high command anywhere! After hanging around for half an hour we ended up going on our own little trip.

Electrical Engineering runs dance classes? Intriguing! Let me know - any time after January 14th is likely to suit me.

crazylemon, you know everything about Imperial, what can you tell me abot ICRadio? Is it something first years get involved with or do they wait a year or two until they have a lot more 'authority'? Does ICRadio have their own music database that you can get music off or do you have to have your own stuff? Do other students actually listen to it at all? What's the situation like for edgy music like DnB and dubstep, house etc? Does everyone get a go doing their own show or do you "work your way up"? I already do a radio show you see, so I was just curious to know what ICRadio was like.

I really don't know, I think you just need to ask.

No it is dance soc, just held in EEE :p:
Nah it is just that we are disorganised. No one was left parent-less I think unless they didn't go to mums and dads. Mine has just never talked to me since then, I have given them my details but they seem happy without me. Tbh I was the same with mine :p:

Personally I don't because my music taste is awful. I like some eurovision songs! :p:

Congrats
The information pack had some accomodation stuff, but apart from that it was just stuff about the course, timetable, the arts (music etc.), that you will probably be able to find on the internet

Sadly probably true :p: Once? Erm every year! (I got drunk in the common room this year. The singalong component had to be disabled...)

For what its worth, most genres of music have their own Imperial Societies. They tend to go out to gigs and the like a lot. I'm on their mailing lists (never been out with them though) and have been invited to see loads of bands, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Imogen Heap, 36 Crazyfists and loads more.
