Hi. I'm also applying to King's for physiology (as well as Leeds). I don't expect to get in though. My year one grades were pretty average.

Yeah, for now I think I'll try and get onto studying a broader based subject for my intercalated degree. Your choices are way too specialised for my liking - I have no idea what I want to do when I graduate!

I'm clearly too thick for the King's iBSc - the application form is confusing me. For the module selection bit, presumably you put in the ones it lists on the website for your chosen subject, but how do you pick the optional ones? Cos it says:
And one option..examples of which include

•Oral Biology (30 credits),
•Anatomy Dissection (15 credits),
•Biology of Ageing (15 credits), or
•a language option

Does that mean I can only pick from those?

Yeah I think you need to select your optional modules from that particular list.

How many credits do the core modules form?

More likely its a student from imperial. Or bar staff sick of such disgusting antics.

Because lets face it, its juvenile and its rank. Chunder buckets. Seriously.

Most of us did it at med school and grew out of it. It was a right of passage
But its still grim.

And the fuss won't last long. Just like it didn't for St Johns or St Catherines.

But usually the colleges come down HARD on all the sports/drinking socs.

I agree with Nick Jamie.

I just hope that Reynolds isn't shut down amidst the fuss - it was already walking a fine line as I say.

60, then I have to choose between a normal research project (30) or a long research project (45), which obv decides how many credits I need from the option list.

Depends on the college.

THere was a great bar in Tommies hospital that was a big part of med school life.

then hospital wanted to build evilina, having a bunch of people vomiting outside a kids hospital wasn't on so they waited until they had enough evidence of hideous drunkeness (with a few ED admissions as well) and they shut it down.

The one with all the signatures on the ceiling? We used to rehearse for the musical in there occasionally when I was in first year - after it was shut down, obviously - it's a bit of a sorry sight now.

Cool, who knows - we might end up in the same class this time next year! :p:

Have you looked at the application form? I'm actually surprised we have to fill in our A-Level grades. I averaged about 74% in first year but I hear they place more weighting on centile rankings, which doesn't do my marks any justice. I came 26th (first quartile) in the clinical sciences yet 73rd and 79th in CPH/PPD and the OSCE respectively, which was in the third quartile. I feel inclined to say that CPH/PPD shouldn't count. :shh:

Edit: There's about 140 in my year.

I'm actually fairly similar. My overall year ranking was lower second/upper third quartile, but in the knowledge papers I was about 35.

Year of 130.

At least you know your ranking! We never get told ours.

You apparently do after you sit Mocks in 4th year. Here's hoping mines will be decent.

I would have been in the top quartile 1st and 2nd year, second for 3rd but bugger knows for this one.

I need to know it next month for intercalated application... there's no way I'm top quartile anyway.

How did mocks go, btw?

Interesting. I think perhaps the Admin lady, Penny, would be helpful. I think she helps work them out or at the very least has access to them or would be able to put you in touch with someone who does know how to get it for you.

Mocks, went meh. It wasn't an obvious disaster nor was it a clear winner. A large proportion of it could have went either way, and now I am just sick of waiting.

I've been dwelling on it so long that I haven't arranged my elective, which has a deadline of Jan 14th. Le bugger.

Penny is away until 4 days before my deadline... I emailed Ms D and am waiting for med school to return from it's extended hibernation.

When are results out? Ooh elective  Where'd you wanna go?

This is true. Our exams officer is really helpful with that stuff.

Morag is better chat, btw. No one is sure when they are and I don't want to appear too keen by asking everyone! As for elective, I might just stay home for it but if I can manage Toronto then I'll jet there.

Thinking so far either Respiratory or GP but to be honest I just have no idea what I REALLY want to do but I know those two options will be decent enough.

Just wish I could pin dow what it is I want to do with my career/life.

Have you tried the Medical Specialty Aptitude test? http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

Just use elective as an excuse to have one hell of an awesome holiday then. I'm sure it doesn't matter that much what you do with it...

Thanks for that link. My top 5 are apparently:

Rehabilitation Medicine,Occupational Medicine,Rheumotology,Paediatrics and Gastroenterology.

The first three in my mind are non starters for me. I couldn't cope with the emotional stress of rehabilitation medicine and I am uninterested by occupational medicine and rheumotology.

At one time, back in August, I was certain Paediatrics was for me but now I think I'd miss adult medicine too much. I'm worried that I'll go the way of one of the Paeds registrars: that I'll eventually want to leave ,this person did after 9 years, but can't because medicine will move on and I'll be a dangerous dinosaur.

Gastroenterology, to this day, is the the area in which I score the highest in my exams but is an area I have yet to experience on the wards and won't do until May.

GP and Respo, which I do enjoy, scored 34th and 28th out of 36. Go figure.

I'd love to just take the time for a holiday but the Medschool are adamant that we undertake a project whether it be an audit or some research. Failure to do so means that you won't receive a class certificate and will have to resit the year.

Was looking our our SMD website as there's been a few changes and saw this,

I haven't looked thoroughly but from the outset seems like it may be of use

My number 1 is aerospace medicine. Cool!

1 aerospace med
2 orthopaedic surgery
3 obstetrics/gynecology
4 general surgery
5 pulmonology
Are those of you who are applying to intercalate now planning to start in September 2011? I'm hoping to intercalate after 4th year (sept 2012) so I think I've got a while. I would absolutely love to be somewhere in London, I am so homesick for it. Nice as the south west is I've had enough already. :colondollar: And I want to live at home and not pay rent. Does the topic we chose to intercalate in have any affect career wise? I found something I like the sound of in haematology but I don't want to do that as a career. Becca-Sarah that surgery and anaesthetics course at Imperial sounds awesome but I'm scared by the competition.

I am so excited about elective planning, even though if I get to intercalate I won't actually go on elective until 2013. Making you do a project is harsh TLP! I hope PMS won't make us do that or my plans are ruined...
