Official Durham Applicants Thread 2011

If you book in advance you can get to London for £8-£10 (travel late at night, book a month in advance). It's 2.5 - 3hours to Kings Cross

I've got a letter in the post today saying I've received an offer. Haven't had confirmation from UCAS though. Did you guys apply for general engineering or did you specify? My personal statement was geared towards mechanical and my AES says "H300 Mechanical Engineering" although am I right in think you don't have to specialise until your 3rd year? Asking for 37 IB points, which I feel is doable. Still no idea what college, but got my fingers crossed for Grey!

Ha. Right now, I'd say my chances of firming Durham are about 80%, even with a King's offer.

The only other competition would be King's College London (about as different a place as you could find, but good for law, apparently), and they've been in touch with me, so they may well make me an offer.

There would be many practical advantages to staying in London (financially and otherwise) for me, but I am ready for a change, and going to Durham would be more of an experience than King's, no doubt. It's a really nice place and certainly being interviewed at Oxford gave me a taste for the idea of studying in a more quiet, traditional place than London. The hustle and bustle of London can be distracting. Especially since I've already got friends here etc.

Plus, I've got family ties to the north-east, and Durham is basically my home town.

Just to reassure you slightly, I also applied on 14th Oct for Law but didn't do my LNAT until 13th Dec and heard that my app went to a college today, so you shouldn't be waiting too long to hear something! Good Luck

FWIW, I think that Durham is the better law school--both academically and career-wise. Research--it places higher in the RAE. Career--it has more recruiting events than KCL and the MC has more on campus visits.

But I agree with everything you said. If I get an offer from LSE, I'll probably firm Durham over them for the reasons you mentioned with regards to something more traditional.
