Social Life at Bristol..

What's it like? Is the kind of place where you know most people, but aren't close with very many? Or is it very much the case that you stick to a closely-knit group of friends? What's the nightlife like? Also, what is the girl to boy ratio roughly? Is it nice and multi-cultural?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, i'm really struggling to find my final University choice and am looking for one with good academics (which is no doubt a problem here) but also a live social life.

Answers to any or all of the questions above would be loverlaaaaay :smile:

I was in Bristol a few seconds ago and i would advise you not to go there. When i was there i almost got raped by some fat woman with a handbag. Not pleasant stuff man.

If you're into drum and bass and dubstep then Bristol is the place for you. Of what I've heard night life is awesome particularly if you get accomodation near the university and you tend to be close you those people in your halls anyway. I don't think you'll live an extreme Skins party lifestyle but I'd say you'd come close-ish to it :wink:

I loved the city anyway, their town centre is amazing and just really pretty, shoppin is great and there's lots to do really, so I'd say you'd have a good time :smile:

Erm I'm not really sure how multicultural it is because I don't live there. When I visited there though, it isn't as multi cultural as London but there are enough cultures to keep you comfortable enough, if you're from a different ethnicity. I'm sure there will be loads of people from differer cultures if you looked long enough. I'd say it's a happy medium really. :h:

Bristol nightlife is probably the best you are going to get.
Like clubs? You have plenty to choose from in walking distance.
Like Pubs? Hundreds.
Like live Music? Big names on all the time.

There is something for everyone, the Phuct night at Bierkeller is for those who like a mosh (and free shots with every beer :wink:

There is a huge indy night at I forget where. Fantastic city.

The city is very multicultural in the centre, with places that label themselves as the 'Cultural quarter' how can it not be? goto the edges and you might find it less so like any city.

I agree that that is definitely "arguable" :rolleyes:

What evidence do you have to back this up? I studied at Durham, lived in Newcastle, socialised with people at Northumbria and now I'm doing my postgraduate at Bristol and all have their pros and cons. Just depends what you like really.

I lived there for a year while I was studying at UWE (now transferring to the other end of the city at Bristol Uni) so have had a rather good taster. There are lots of reasonably priced pubs in the Clifton area and then depending on what sort of music you're in to there's a good range of other bars and clubs. Bristol is the home of drum and bass and there's a good alternative scene with places like the O2 arena (Ramshackle on Fridays). It's not a huge city and yet there is more than enough to do. Park street just down from the Wills Building is full of little bars.

More than anything, like most places, you really have to explore the place for yourself and work out what's good and what's not so good.

Bristol nightlife is very, very good. I'm not a student there but I live there.

Park street and the triangle (clifton, nice area, lots of students) has lots of bars and clubs, such as bunker, po na na, comfi, then further down into town there are much bigger places like thekla, syndicate (has propaganda on a wednesday), O2 academy (ramshackle on friday is good). There are many, many more places to go out but as I'm only around in the holidays I don't tend to venture far from where I know lol

Depends what you like, it's fantastic for bar crawls due to the number of college bars, and to be fair the union is an amazing venue, it's just not always used for the best events unfortunately. Though Friday nights were great for groups of friends.

Newcastle was 10 minutes away on the train, and you could get the 2am train back to Durham, which was ideal.

As I say, pros and cons to so many places, though I do agree Durham in itself is not great for nightlife of the 'clubbing' variety. And believe me I am a clubber!

Oh really? There used to be trains at 11.30pm, 2am, and 4am....all were perfect timing for whether you were out for bars, commercial clubs, or more serious clubbing!

Bristol is good!!! Peoplewise, it kinda depends on what your like and where you live. I think for a mix of people go for the Stoke Bishop halls because then its easier to have a wider group of friends just because you can just wander over to different halls at random times of day/night and visit people.

Nightlife is good. Lots of bars and clubs. Definately try the Corrie Tap challenge!

No idea about boy/girl ratio, i assume overall its roughly equal but coursewise theres a huge bias.

Multicultural... sort of. As a city, yes (less than london but thats a given for a lot of places) As a university, theres quite a few rahs and more private than state schools but 99% of the people are lovely :smile:

I would not say it is nearly as multicultural as London, I visited London the other day and could notice the difference staight away, walking in and around the city of Bristol and to and from lectures generally for me it is predominately white however.

I definitely agree with this. From leaving London at Paddington to arriving at Temple Meads you notice a big difference. London is also a lot 'busier' generally. Bristol provides a good mix.
Bristol must provide for one of the best student night scenes in the country. It's fantastic.

There's the Bierkeller on Fridays, but it's mostly screamo and nu-metal rubbish interspersed with precious few classic rock/metal tracks (or at least that was the situation when I stopped going there a couple of years ago). Also there's the Crown pub with the cavern club underneath it, they do metal nights but I haven't been much.

Loads of great gigs happening all the time as well!
