Something along the lines of 'Le tabac et l'alcool sont / représentent un grand problème dans / pour notre société', perhaps? It would probably depend on the context

Tabac, drogue et alcool sont de gros problème dans notre société

do you think that'd be ok?

Not too bad, but remember two things:

Abstract nouns, such as 'smoking', need an article in French where they don't in English. Therefore it's 'le tabac' etc.;

You could either say 'de gros problèmes' (ie. 'big problems') or 'un gros problème' (ie. 'a big problem'), but you can't mix them up.

Hope this helps!

Pleasure. Good luck with your writing piece (or similar :smile:).
how do you say 'Most people smoke because they find it relaxing and sociable' in french?

You should try and work it out yourself first and then let people correct you if you're still stuck. You won't ever learn if you just ask people to give you the answers.

Yeah try and do it yourself and then we'll correct you.
I know how to say that in German :redface:
most people fumer parce qu'ils trouvent relaxant et sociable

Ever heard of online translation services e.g. Google translator (albeit that one's a bit ****ty)

That would be 'du poulet' and 'du jambon'. Ham is masculine and you need the 'de' when talking about eating something.

la plupart des gens fument parce qu'ils le trouvent très reposant et sociable.

Although I'd say "certains" rather than "la plupart des gens"
