What are the first things you're taught at med school?

I know everywhere will be different but what were the first things that you were taught at med school?

Gotta love attempts to be funny.

I would also like to know a (serious) answer.

Which bin to vomit in.
Which members of the rugby club not to vomit on.

I can't remember, the first lecture was on some really basic physiology or some such, why d'you ask? :shifty:

(Actually that wasn't the first lecture, that was two weeks in when I started turning up)

so you can read up before starting?

I wish I was as studious as you. Cardio and Respiratory I think, with a lot of emphasis on 'Strand 2' = clinical/sociological type stuff. This is in Edinburgh tho, dunno about elsewhere.

CPR (freshers week), then a lot about cells, the basic organ systems/anatomy and all the sociology type stuff. Oh and there's a load of stats thrown in there too!

As far as I remember, I think we started with the spinal column in anatomy, nerve and muscle in physiology (which went MILES over my head first time around) and something respiration-related in biochemistry.

Not sure what I was first taught, one of the first things I learned was that you can't learn everything, keep your sanity.
Not to steal a bus ride on the 25 because one day we could become a Doctor and apparantly a criminal record can be bad
-Spinal column anatomy
-Handwashing
-How to take blood pressure with stethoscope
-All the bits of the cadaver go inside the yellow tub, including fat
-Don't go too wild during Freshers week as a criminal record is bad for your medical career

We were told:

"if you wanna be somebody, and you wanna go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention"

(legend of a lecturer actually sang it to us)

that the hard work started now.
