Take two suits, and pop to the bathroom to change if you realise you've got it wrong.

Alternatives to traditional black tie that wouldn't look too out of place http://www.esquire.co.uk/2011/01/an-esquire-guide-to-black-tie/

Formal is invariably black tie in the evening, morning dress during the day.

Lounge suits are informal or, in the parlance of invitations, often 'business attire'.

TBH I really hate the skinny-black-tie-and-black-suit look. It's much better to go the extra mile and wear proper black tie. Smoking jackets/ velvet dinner jackets (worn with bow ties of course) work as "quirky" alternatives though.

Same, but I just thought I would throw out a few alternatives

Fair enough. This is also a good (and more orthodox, if that's not an oxymoron) source for alternatives.
Red tie.
