Which country in the world is the best from an objective viewpoint?

Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Finland are the best countries. They have by far the best welfare systems, enjoy very high standards of living, low rates of crime and little in the way of income inequality.

Further to this I think Canada and New Zealand (despite low wages) are nice safe countries as well. In terms of Britain, it is reasonably well placed to withstand future challenges (due to its excellent geo-strategic location) like global warming, huge immigration influxes, droughts etc... but still suffers from several chronic problems. One of these the growing income gap and life opportunities between rich and poor and the growing North / South divide. Having said that Britain is a pretty decent place to be no matter what crap you hear in the news and from people on TSR. But it is not the very best but certainly in the top 20 out of 180

The UK. It may lose out to some Scandinavian countries in terms of technical stuff that don't really matter to the majority of people, but it's a much more stimulating place to live.

I love the UK, and it's a great place to live. But there are differences that matter to most people. Like maternity and paternity leave, welfare, health care and so on. How 'stimulating' it is comes down to your personal opinion.

We already argued about this you know. I still disagree. If I had to make a list of countries I wanted to live in, the Scandinavian set would be right down at the bottom with Cote d'Ivoire and Libya. Cold weather, expensive beer, no decent sport or entertainment, no great financial centre or top 10 universities, famously unfriendly populace? No thanks. Sounds like someone's depiction of purgatory.

We have plenty of paternity leave in this country now. Our welfare is very generous, although like most people, I don't need it. In my experience, our healthcare is world class.

Oh right... You're that... guy. I remember you very well now. You are set in your ways. Even if you don't seem to know much about Scandinavia. Fine.

We obviously enjoy different things in life. I get up in the morning and think, yeah, today I'm going to visit one of the most famous, exciting and cutting edge cities in the world, gonna listen to some of the greatest thinkers on the planet, then watch one of the biggest and best sporting events, then go and see the most famous musicians, go to enjoy some of the best cuisine in the world at a reasonable price, and drink world class beverages at a cost that isn't an unreasonably high proportion of my monthly income. Could this get any better?

Whereas you obviously get up in the morning, and say "hell yeah, I live in a country with fractionally better welfare and paternity leave provisions than a whole host of other counties".

There is more violent crime in France than in most Western European countries, the UK being a large exception. It's still a very safe country overall though, and probably the best country in the world.
I lived in Finland for four months for work and when I was there a fast food restaurant, Hesburger, tried to introduce fish and chips. It was removed after a week because of so many complaints!

Sorry but that's just so totally removed from how the average Briton lives. Maybe if you are a young upper-middle class professional in London, but the majority of us Brits live like **** compared to our continental and Scandinavian counterparts. Also what you said could easily apply to Stockholm or Oslo (apart from the reasonably priced booze) and those cities are much cleaner and safer.

And although I think Norway is culturaly mediocre, it's still a far better place than the UK. People are safer, more educated, healthier, less violent and far more attractive. I accepted our social malaise years ago mate, and let me tell you, it was liberating.

Right, because in, say, Newcastle there are no decent sports clubs, and you never get any bands going up there?

The majority of Brits don't live like crap, what a load of rubbish. Current global financial crisis nonewithstanding, the majority of Brits have a perfectly acceptable standard of living. Try living in Libya.

That's a lot of nonsense. You have no idea what you're talking about. But fine, like I've said. You are set in your ways. I certainly don't think like that.
There is no reason arguing this. It will go nowhere.

Yes, some good points there, well argued. I concede defeat.

I wasn't trying to argue. Merely the fact that you're impossible to talk to. You'll just spew out some more rubbish.
You know very little about Scandinavia in general. But you're set in your ways. So yes, there is no reason to argue.

One would assume that if I was talking rubbish, you would easily be able to make a compelling refutation, and would come up with a more substantial reply than simply repeating "yeah well you're talking rubbish". The fact that you're not able to speaks volumes. Imagine if David Cameron answered questions like that in PMQs.

You have gone from Europe to Western Europe  Europe wide I doubt we do, Western Europe that is debatable. Unlike Britain we have guns so there is a higher chance of it being more violent.

I meant Western Europe from the start, I'm mostly referring to the social situation in parisian and marseille banlieues. Britain has much more violence than France though.

So why say Europe? the banlieues near Paris are mainly filled with immigrants or gangs, Sarkozy hasn't really got rid of them or put money into the area to help easy tensions  he failed in that area and marseille isn't even French anymore it is just immigrants so meh.

France in general is more safer than most other countries in Western Europe IMO.

Yeah there are, but you get these in any major European city (maybe not sports clubs, but that's no where near as important as you are making out.) And I'm not being funny but I've found almost any urban area in the UK north of sheffield (and a great deal south) to be pretty dire, frankly.

It's all relative, I wasn't thinking about Libya (one of of the most developed North African countries, why did you choose it? The recent troubles?) I was thinking about Western Europe. We work excessive hours with short breaks, eat crap food, have tiny houses, **** weather, ugly dirty towns, **** overpriced public transport, **** roads, boring countryside, fat uneducated white trash everywhere - but the main thing is people's attitude towards life here, there's no sense of community or appreciation of culture, we're content with X factor, cheap larger, junkfood and not knowing our neighbours name. It's disgraceful.

Mate, I prefaced this in my original post. I said it's almost exclusively within immigrant communities. Still exists though, Germany and Scandinavia have similar problems but not to the same extent, in southern Europe things like pick pocketing are more common but violence is quite rare.

I love France, but it's not perfect.

Actually I live in a nice middle class market town in a relatively big house, it's OK, but I'm well aware of how most British people live.

Bulgaria is the best place to live if you have a lot of money

+ you can kill from 1 to 10 ppl and your punishment will be to sign in the police station every day for 2 months

+ you can sleep with 9 to 18 year-old girls/boys (w/e floats your boat) without even worry about anything

+ you can consume vast amount of drugs and booze on really cheap prices

+ you can drive cars/helicopters/tanks/planes in drunk/drug state and noone will care

+ you can do w/e you like

and if that is not a good life ?

In which case I can only conclude you gather most of your information about how the rest of British society functions from that well known contemporary sociological journal, The Daily Mail.
