How were you taught Sex Education?

Erm... I think a nurse - the mother of somebody - came in once and showed us how to put condoms on a banana. We then did it ourselves. Obviously, a lot of bananas ended in the trash that day.

We had to do presentations about STDs and contraception in biology.

Other than that, from friends and just general stuff you pick up. Tbh, I wouldn't have wanted to learn any of the other stuff in a lesson or from my parents. :s-smilie:

Year 5, the last day before the summer holidays, watching a video in school for the whole day that included a father, mother and their son and daughter walking around the house naked.

FML.

Ahaha we saw that too! as well as a video of a live birth...

Ours started in year 4 with a cartoon of a couple chasing each other round a room, tickling each other with a feather.
These 2 ladies come in to our class we were year 9 and started showing us a dildo and condoms and were taking questions.

it was pretty crap tbh.
"See this hole? See how what you have fits into it? Go figure".
Watch 2.35 onwards, it was exactly like this.

We were taught the 'scientific' stuff in year 7 - but IMO, I was too young to understand properly at that age.

We also got taught about contraception in year 10 - which I think is about the right time. We got shown how to use condoms and there was a bit of talk about the female condom and the coil - but that's all I can remember that we were taught.

Most things I've learnt are from friends, my own experiences and the internet (no, not porn). School helped a little bit - but I feel that it could have been better - especially as the teacher who taught us about contraception was an ICT teacher - not a proper Personal Development teacher.
A diagram of a woman's menstrual cycle.

And a video of a woman giving birth.

Great help.

This is exactly what we did. Gosh, that was fun.
Year 7 watched a video, at the end the woman gave birth which everyone looked away/ closed their eyes, because no one was watching miss rewinded and the baby went back in!!!!!!

year 5&6 - lessons that said sex produces babies and explained very simply what sex was but mostly did about puberty

secondary school - learn't science stuff in biology, nurses came in and talked about contraception and diseases and we had tutorials were we talked about the social side. these things spanned a lesson a week for maybe a month - two months a year, except the nurses who took up one whole day a year to work with each year group (a few came in and we were split up into classes but it was an off timetable day)

That was it. Seriously.
One of my cousins friends very kindly gave me a very hands on practical lesson

I went to an all girls school and in year 8 we got taught about sex ed. Everything we were told was about the man; how blood rushed into his penis to make it hard and how once he's pleasured enough he will orgasm and that's that. We were never taught that it was enjoyable for men AND women, nor that women orgasmed. I had no idea that masturbation could be enjoyable for the woman until I was in year 10 or 11 or that women could even orgasm. The only thing we were taught about women was the menstrual cycle which I still don't understand completely because it was so scientific and technical in the way I was taught.

Looking back I feel angered that sex ed is all about the scientific aspects of sex and not the social aspects. Yes, I now know exactly what happens when the egg is fertilised, but I'd much rather have known that if the condom breaks, there's something called 'the morning after pill'. I also would have liked to known exactly what the pill does or even that condoms may break and aren't foolproof.

We were very much taught sex ed with the philosophy that sex makes babies and you only have sex if you want babies. I don't think the science behind sex was enough for me to understand everything that happened. I'd rather have had practice putting a condom on a banana and learning about different contraceptions. I'd like to have known that it's normal for girls to become wet when turned on, and that playing with nipples can increase sensitivity. I'd like to have known that there is something called a clitoris and a G-spot and that they give pleasure to women too. I'd like to have known about the hymen breaking and the vagina expanding during sex. All these small things that I had to find out by myself.

How were you taught sex ed? Did you find it beneficial? Do you wish you were taught things differently or are you pleased with what you found out?

Year 6 was the start of learning about the menstrual cycle and a bit of sex ed (everyone had gathered some knoweldge of sex by this poitn and I remeber the teacher letting us ask questions in a box.... mine was what if people were different heights)... they spared us the details though...

Yr 7 was sex ed in biology, which was all about the male anatomy really, very scientific, though did include a video of a naked family so you saw the anatomy in full :O... by this point the emphasis was still on the mechanics of the human body...

Yr9-11 we had PSE which involved knowledge of diseases, how to put on a condom.... nothing about female enjoyment or even (now I think about it) how things really go together!
But... by this time... people had started to sleep with others so we were taught about preventative methods, missing out (for those of us who didnt sleep around), the step between male mechanics and protectiion, the step about what sex involves/means!

It still feels like a buzz topic to me, but i guess thats because of my life experiences, not my education...

Taught about the biological crap in year 7, laughed it off, and then learnt from mates who'd had their own experiences. Filled in any gaps using the internet
