You could use your spare time going to interesting places like Goa ( Sunburn festival in December) is meant to be absolutely amazing and of course North India.
IIT is a world class university with entry requirements almost being at par with Oxbridge. Besides, english is widely spoken in Mumbai and the food is absolutely amazing.

To get into the IIM's you would realistically need around 740-780 in GMAT. They require 99+ percentile from local students which is equivalent to 780 in GMAT.

have you never been to India?!! Yeah of indian origin not born or raised there though, I went to Goa when I was a little child. I want to go to mainland India! Besides if someone asks I always call myself Pakistani

China is best as there are better uni's in hong kong and there are more tourist attractions

Hey, OP, I've been to both. I loved Shanghai, disliked Mumbai. I also have a Japanese friend who went one year to Mumbai, he really disliked it too.
But at the end of the day, it depends on what you want. Shanghai is like a business city, it's modern, fun, etc. I loved it there because it's exactly the kind of city I like - mind you, it's the most "modern city" in Mainland China - by that I mean it's very very international. Mumbai... Mh, I think it's also a great city, but it broke my heart. The amount of poverty, the danger everywhere, the crazy things they do there... Maybe I was too young (16), but it was a hard place to get used to. I think one can come to love India, most of the others loved it, there's an enormous amount of color, of life, the Indians are genuinely friendly too (btw, Shanghai people are city people, and they're also business people, they're considered to be some of the most unfriendly people in China) but the contrast between rich and poor is appalling. Another thing that's good though about India - no government coming into your life all the time, no need for a VPN, you don't have people telling you where to go or what to do.

EDIT: Oh and quick note about food. Both are delicious, but Indian food in Mumbai is extremely spicy in my opinion. The guys on the trip used to joke about the "ring of fire" (i'll let you guess what that is.) In Shanghai, the food is delicious, sweet and steamed. Food is important when you're living there!

You might even be able to hire someone to cook/clean for you, if you wanted. 5/6 grand is like 4 lakhs and the average wage for a middle class job is like 10-20 thousand rupees a month, which is like 300 pounds and these are the people who have big houses, own multiple cars and live in brilliant areas, etc. So you can see how well off you'd be there.

Especially the teenagers, I saw more iPods and smart phones on them than we have here and a lot of them could speak better english than us, tbh. As for China, I had a great time there as well but the people that I saw were so grumpy and always rushed that it kind of ruined the trip. Might just have been my experience though.

STOP COMPARING MUMBAI TO SHANGHAI, OR INDIA TO CHINA, 2 countries are not on the same level at all, only ignorant western media tend to put them together...

Shanghai is an extremely expensive city. Because its China's most westernized mainland city it has the "international prices", the subway system is unbelievably expensive compared to beijing hong kong or even New York city. Even its food can nearly be compared to western prices, because Shanghai has the largest population of westerners in mainland China, it can cost $9 for a cup of coffee or $12 for noodles. I say this because usually foreigners won't touch the "dive" restaurants that locals eat because they are afraid its not as clean as the larger more expensive restaurants. Unless you are going to shanghai jiaotong university or fudan university I'd be wary. You won't be learning proper mandarin in Shanghai and the Shanghainese dialect is considered the most confusing and bizarre dialect and even hard for non shanghainese chinese people to learn. Don't get me wrong Shanghai is a good city if to live in if you are financially secure. The people who really enjoy Shanghai are the rich westerners with these super amazing apartments etc etc. I'd try mumbai just because I've lived in China for a long time and it would be a change of pace and I absolutely loathe shanghai.

And I didn't say anything wrong. Go to mainland China to find out the entry requirement of Peking University and Tsing Hua Uiversity (the ratio to get in this two unis in an average province of china is 80 out of 130,000) you will find it a piece of cake to get admitted to Oxbridge as undergraduate.
But on the other hand a prestigious uni should not be famous for the difficulty to get in but the challenge to get out.

Mukmbai's a pretty relaxed city. I'm a girl n i go with my girl friends all the time to even like the shadiest places u can imagine, no guys escorting or watevr. But I would say india's most relaxed city when it comes to these things is Calcutta. It's also pretty safe compared to both mumbai and delhi. And people smoke pot everywhere in that city or they're always on a smoke break. Life's pretty Bohemian out there and i enjoy it once in a while. students form the country like heading cuz of the lax drug laws.
About Mumbai, its pretty safe u knw. Just don't get screwed by the shop people cuz once they knw ur a foreigner they will mooch you! About the food, its brilliant but i would suggest to go to the nicer restros and also it won't hurt your pocket cuz in dollar terms its super cheap!
India's prettiest city is by far Delhi, the infrastructure is awesome. Most foreigners are amazed with the metro (subway) cuz its so efficient and super clean. The only downside is that its not safe ofr women, at all. their men are leches of the first degree and personally they disgust me. Mumbai and Calcutta are way friendlier and safer on those terms.
