Could you go out someone who was politically opposite you?
eg. if you're left wing could you date a right winger and vice versa?
i don't think i could, if they were really vocal about it i definitely don't think i could. if they were opposite, but didn't ever bring it up, i probably could.

yeah definitely, so long as her beliefs do not affect how she perceives me personally and if they don't interfere with our courtship; i see no problem with that.
i'm a firm believer in the public and private divide. what you believe about politics is in the public sphere and should not interfere in the private sphere. extreme views tend to breach that divide.

Yeah I could. I use a very strange system I have devised to find out if I could get along with others. It's called 'The Pub Test'.
Basically, if you can talk to each other and get along fine in a pub and agree(mostly) upon the things you talk about, then you could go out together.
Things like politics and religion, while very interesting, are not things you would mention in a pub. These views are often deep-set and you are unlikely to change each others mind, only causing conflict. I find it's best to focus on your similarities and not worry about your differences.
The only way politics would ever be a problem if they were really preachy and had a problem with you about it. As long as you can see past those differences and be at peace with them, then it's no problem.

I could probably do short term casual dating and hook ups. It'd be difficult to do anything long term though really if they were diametrically opposed, especially if really vocal about it. For example, some guy I've been chatting to recently is a total red banner waving lefty and it's incredibly off putting.
Don't think I could date a hardcore supporter of the BNP to be honest...and serious Tory supporters are a bit of a stretch too, but as long as they're not extreme and we don't try to influence each other I'm sure it could work. Religion is similar. Since I'm a Christian (but not extreme at all) there's no way I could date an extreme atheist who thinks that anyone with a religion is narrow-minded and stupid, especially if they always went on about it. It would drive me nuts. So as long as they don't get preachy, I don't care.

basing a relationship on that is only a short term one... when you go long term you start to talk about things like politics... EG with my best friend i do occaisionally because it's in the news so often and it affects me.

i definitely couldn't date even a casual BNP member
i'm not religious but i also couldn't date an extreme atheist who kept making fun of religious people and calling them stupid/narrow minded or an extreme theist who kept quoting the bible every 5 seconds since i'm kind of in the middle.
I went out with a Tory (and he was quite active, member of Young Conservative future, volunteered with the local Tory MP etc) when I myself am kind of middle of the way/maybe slightly left wing.
