I don't know how anyone can call Oxford or Cambridge Overrated, they are great universities, same with places like Durham and UCL.

However based on some of the people accepted into places like Liverpool and Cardiff in my school (really not very intelligent people) they might not be as exclusive as other universities which offer the same grades for particular courses. But that doesn't mean they are overrated.

In terms of underrated universities everyone is going to be biased as they haven't experienced other unis. I think DMU (one of my choices) is underrated in terms of English as it is ranked in the top 5 unis for research for English. But I'm not sure how it is in other courses.
Overrated: Bristol/Warwick
Underrated: err Manchester (bias) or Southampton.

This.

And to fool all the coventry yobs. If they realized there was some place of learning in their city then they would smash it. Calling it Warwick confuses them enough to keep it safe from harm.

Im from Coventry and I love this! We were taking a trip to use their Library the other day and 3 members of my history class asked what bus they needed to get to Warwick in order to get there...

The city isn't all bad, there's a small corner which is nice. The rest is a hole though.
How can people say ex Polytecs are all overrated. There's alot of them, I don't understand how people can generalise them all into being ''overrated''.

My step-dad used to police it, back when it was the most violent city in Europe.

Made me LOL!

Goldsmiths is so overrated. It's a glorified community college.

Would you care to elaborate?
I'd hardly describe it as ' a glorified community college' seeing as the typical offer for the English course is AAB-AAA this year. Also, it's less competative to get onto the art course at Oxford than it is to get into Goldsmiths for art...

That's exactly what I said when I got an offer there:

I enrolled on the Media and Communications course, entry requirements were AAB - "That's like the entry requirements for a Law or medicine course! Everyone will be smart there!" I said. So wrong.

No one on my course actually had AAB. Most students came through from Access courses (never took A levels) or were let on the course with lower grades. The high course requirements are just there because it's a popular, oversubscribed course. Not because it's academically challenging.

The students in my seminar groups never did the reading before a seminar, they chatted or texted in the back of the classroom like teenagers, didn't know what simple words like "connote" or "juxtapose" or "the former and the latter" meant.

The SU was tiny, it was a little hall under a bridge, there were only about 40 societies to choose from. The area wasn't great, the crime was high and I was mugged in my freshers week.

I dropped out after a term and it was the best choice I've ever made to leave there. Some people might like it, and everyone is different. But I really hated it. It didn't suit me at all, I'd strongly advise against any of my friends from going there.

It's really good for Art. If you want to do Art then goldsmiths is the place to be. Produces some fantastic YBAs and brilliant resources for art students. But not for the other courses.
What is the point of this thread? This is just a chance to belittle other people's unis which is quite frankly very sad. I bet most people on this thread don't even go to uni.

There's nothing wrong with access courses, they're probably more helpful for doing a degree than A-Levels because they prepare you for the sort of things you will be taught. But, i know what you mean, it does feel like a bit of a kick in the teeth when you work extremely hard to get A's and B's in 3 or 4 A-Levels over 2 years and there's people doing the same course as you that have only done a 1 year access course and have no other real formal qualifications

That does sound a bit rubbish though, you must have been unlucky with the intake that year, because i have to say that my experience of the uni is completely different, but you're completely entitled to your opinion.
But, I must completely disagree with you concerning the SU. I know it's small (and it is the bridge, bot under the bridge) but it's size just makes it more personal and fun, i think. But, yeah, the societies aren't great, i'll agree withe you there!
I have found the area really good! I have a friend at Reading who said that 2 girls got raped during freshers and i've not heard of any crime to G/S students at all apart from an attempted mugging. The students just fit it as part of the community and most of the pubs are student pubs, but obv your experience must have really put you off!
I guess it just suits some people, after all there is a clear 'type' of person who attends there - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=SFG

Is Surrey over-/under-rated? Nobody seems to know!
Overrated: Exeter

Underrated: Surrey, Oxford Brooks (might be biased with the first one)

I think just about every uni has been mentioned in both categories

My entry to this thread for underrated - University of Manchester. Its UK rankings are laughable, given its international rep.

Does Manchester have that good of an international rep? Hmm, very interesting...

I definitely agree with you that Goldsmiths suits a very particular type of trendy, fashionable, urban student. I would never claim one uni to be 'objectively' better than another because it's all about what you bring to the uni and your own personal experience.

But I feel like Goldsmiths' success resides in the creative arts, the creative arts is what they specialise in, what they are famous for.

The other degrees (like Media, Sociology, Politics, English) seem to be from a completely different universe, the uni was nothing like what I've since experienced at Warwick, I just think I was more suited to Warwick as a person.

Well, it consistently comes in the top 10 for Europe in international rankings. Bizarrely, its world ranking is often higher than its UK ranking, in some league tables.

Couldn't agree more, Bristol is VERY over rated. They, as an academic unit, are very rude. They havn't got much to offer except their 'high status', but to be honest with the way they have treated many applicants this year I think as you say, they may be about to slip off of their pedestal.

Out of interest, what do you mean by 'the way they have treated many applicants?' Do you just mean that good candidates have received rejections (as some inevitably will for competitive courses), or have you had a really bad experience?

I'm not at university yet, so I'm not sure I can really offer an opinion here. Although, as I think has already been mentioned, you probably can't really legitimately say that X university is over/underrated unless you've experienced it first hand.
How the hell is Warwick overrated you idiots. Just because it's not 100 years old and has no pre historic builidings doesn't make it overrated. I'd say Warwick is underrated because of pre-conceived notions by ignorant dolts despite being one of the best unis in UK for Maths and Econ and a few others.

No, I am not biased, I have no connections with the University of Warwick, I'm just telling the truth.
