Fringes - Physics

Lets say I have a double slit experiment set up and monochromatic light passing through the slits.

Lets imagine I increase the WIDTH of each slit but maintain the SAME slit separation.

It is said that there would be fewer fringes observed in such a scenario.

Why ?

What happens to water waves if you diffract them through a gap much larger than their wavelength?

The diffraction effect is much less pronounced.

So are you implying the incident light at the slit doesnt diffract as much and only a smaller area of the screen has any noticeable fringes on it ?

That's effectively it, yes.
