what do you do then? All i do is change diapers and feed and wash them in the morning. Seeing so many old wrinkly bodies naked was slightly traumatic but i was over it after a week...till one of them made sexual noises while i was cleaning her and tried to persuade me for sex :afraid:

The first time I had to wash an old lady... most awkward thing ever :indiff:

She tried to persuade you for sex? What did you say?! :rofl2:

And, erm... I admit patients and basically go through tonnes of paperwork with them, repeating a fair bit of it once their procedure is done. Then, if they're not having a gastroscopy, give them a gown and paper pants (slippers and a dressing gown too if they're lazy and didn't bring their own) for them to get dressed into. Escort them to the lounge, and when it's their turn to go through, take them to theatre and wire them up and aid the anesthetist putting the cannula in. Oh, and take temperature/blood pressure/pulse/respiratory rate about 3/4 times for each patient. Blood sugar if they're diabetic, peak flow if they're asthmatic. If people come in for flow rates, then testing urine and scanning bladders and stuff.

Aside from that, filing of the patients notes before they come in (making sure everything is labelled, all dates/procedures/clinicians name etc is filled in and all the sheet needed on the day are present), making beds, general cleaning etc.

If on the ward most things are done, then helping in outpatients every now and again - ECGs, MRSA swabbing, urine testing, or in with the consultants and just passing them things and more filing of stuff.

That's the majority of what I do. But, I work on a day case surgery unit only which closes at night so we don't get any patients who stay over. All the patients have to be well, so pretty much able to do everything for themselves and fairly well, or they wouldn't be admitted in the hospital I work.

Every now and again I might go and help in the radiology department where you do even less - just escorting patients back and forth, telling them what to take off and what to put on, maybe asking them to empty their bladder in a toilet, and filling in notations on the computer.

Oh yeah, the first time... Okay, I don't do that. The closest I come to is helping them fasten the straps of their gown. :ninja:

i tried to persuade her to get out of bed with breakfast and i sat her up and kept muttering about how we're the same tho I'm darker, then she held on to my arm and start caressing it while i was washing her, kept telling me to lie down and have a rest, you're a handsome fella, no one's as good as you, just lie down for a minute...i got down there and she was like ooh ooh (sex noise) that feels nice at which point i dropped the damn wipe and got someone else to swap. Was deeply disturbing! Last week she went 'when are we going to have sex?' another old lady proper told her off. Lol

:zomg: i want your job! I'm on 5.93 too :frown: gonna try getting some on NHSP

If you stay back a year, probably not - do you have extenuating circumstances as to why you don't have the grades for med this year?

It's not bad, thankfully! I guess I'm lucky in some respects. Although, I don't really get experience with actually ill patients. Not that I want people to become severely ill but y'know.

Ahahahaha, you got someone else to do it? Bless you. :rofl2: That sounds, ridiculously uncomfortable if you've not had it before.

They have a centre in Manchester!

http://www.greatermanchestercats.co.uk/index.php?page=recruitment

Ring them and see if they have vacancies? They had quite a few before, not sure now though. Also, if your wage is the same as mine, you'll be on just over £6 an hour!

NHSP, definitely! Although I heard they want at least 6 months experience. It's beneficial because during uni holidays, you can also pick up shifts here and there.

yer a girl, i did her person instead, lol. It was disturbing more than anything else cos she's nearly bald as well and some witch like features (hate to sound horrible)

No vacancy :frown:, is it possible to get part time cos i have full time already. I wanna do NHSP throughout uni, 6 hours a week or something like that just so i can say i've been working as an HCA for 3years when i apply for post grad and such plus for insight's sake.

I volunteered there for 9months but showing people round so it's probably not the same?

Old and withering away. Bless you. Mentally scarred much?

Did you ring them? Don't just check online because half the time they don't advertise it on their own website (which is dumb, but that's the way it goes). When I applied they said they had it up on their website and I said their website said they had no vacancy. :dontknow:

Hmm, they might consider volunteering as an extra as well but it may not count as actual experience? I'm not sure. But, you'll have worked 6 monthsish as a HCA by September? And I think you can do part time, or even, just pick shifts whenever your free so however many hours you want. Definitely something to show come grad entry!

Yer i'll ring them up if they let me work shifts round my full time job, thanks

Oh right, fair enough, yer that's why i decided to apply there cos i'm not interested in the money, i mean it's nice but no-one wants a job in first yr of uni, that's why im working my ass off now, touching old ladies

No problem! They could hopefully put you on bank so you can work for them when you're free. :yep:

It's a hard life... For us. But, it'll be worth it in the end! At least that's what keeps us going.
