I'm 20 tomorrow. I'm spending tonight in tears, locked in my bedroom with my possessions in bags at the door (my mother wants me to leave in the morning). I have one 'sort-of' friend, no boyfriend, and no idea what to do with my life.
No-one cares, and I can't explain how much that hurts.

I've only got one friend. We just got back from holiday where I enjoyed socialising, trying new things, and spending a lot of time walking around the beautiful city. She spent half the time with a sad look in her eyes complaining that a week was seeming too long because she missed TV, facebook, and her boyfriend.

My retail job sucks. People who have worked 30-odd years say they have never worked somewhere that gives it's employees so little respect.

Haven't had a relationship. Thankfully still have at least enough respect for myself to hold out for someone not after a ONS.

I spent an hour or two researching clubs in my area/jobs/etc. It's sad enough that I have to do this, but I wanted to go into my birthday knowing I had a plan for a positive future. Sadly it didn't really help. Then my mother suddenly decided she wanted to use the laptop, but since I don't want her knowing I've had to resort to this I asked for five extra minutes (to delete the history, etc). She went mental, we argued and well now all my belongings are packed in binbags. Just as well, I can't cope with the constant rows she causes over nothing.

I feel like I'm missing out on life. All I've ever wanted is a nice group of reliable friends, a loving boyfriend, and a job that I don't hate that gives me enough money to live on. That's hardly much to ask, is it? I mean I'ld enjoy traveling around Europe for abit but..... well I know this sounds pathetic, but that wouldn't make me as happy as feeling loved. I'm not just talking romantically loved, but even just as a person and as a friend too.

I completely sympathise. My Mother is a psychotic b**** too and would do just that sort of thing. The only way we really get along is that we live apart now, although we still have perfectly amicable telephone conversations and I spend every Summer visiting her.

Even though it's a difficult step, maybe moving away would be the best thing? Then you can start a new relationship with you Mum knowing you can always put the phone down if she starts b*tching.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has replied, you've cheered me up abit . Which is saying something considering my mothers just come upstairs shouting and giving me extra bags 'so I dont forget anything' and reminding me i'll need 'transport for my furniture' :frown:.
I know I need to do something, I need to get a decent job, and I do think moving would be a good idea even if it is just to travel for a while. I've been delaying it because I've never felt brave enough to actually take that chance.
Thanks for the people who have gave me advice and encouragement. And thank you to everyone else who has just been generally nice. I really appreachiate it
:birthday:

Sorry if your life sucks at the moment, but here's hoping a new decade means new great change .

I feel quite similar to you at times as well. At least you do have a job though, even if it is a sucky one. But I suppose you can keep looking for a new one in the meantime. What sort of retail company are you working for by the way? I was thinking of working in retail myself, but I worry when people say things like that :s-smilie:

It's gone midnight, which means...

Happy Birthday! :yay:

OP, look for a new job in the jobcentre. Also, what qualifications do you have? If you haven't been to university, maybe look into it?
Happy birthday!!!!!!! XXXXXXX   ^___^

Well......do something about it.
Sitting on a forum, looking for sympathy aint gonna help your case.

Ahh abit of brutal honesty there, haha:tongue:. However I know that, and I wasn't even looking for sympathy rather I just had a moment of feeling completely helpless and needed to rant.
Sitting on the forum has actually helped. It's cheered me up by reminding me that even when everyone around you is making your life hard, there are still nice people out there.

First of all, happy birthday!
Second, don't leave your house yet! Apologise to your mum and do whatever to stay in your house until you can find accommodation somewhere else.
Third, find another job as quick as possible and quit your old one.
Fourth, join clubs to make friends or try online dating.

If you have any money saved up, try and find a travelling partner and travel Europe for a bit. I'm sure the internet or TSR could provide you with someone to go around Europe with (make sure they're not weirdos first!)

Good luck!
Are you Asian?
Awww, I have been in that situation with my parents as well! I know how it feels, don't worry at the end you'll be happy. Happy birthday. xxx
Life gets better after 20. Seriously.

I hope so too! Although 'new decade' makes me feel dead old

I work for a well known large high-street fashion store. It's terrible, the managers are bitchy/incompetent/treat the staff like dirt. Poorly paid, working hours are changed constantly, and in general it is just badly run. However many people I know have left and gone onto other retail stores which they love. Don't let what people say put you off, you have to experience it yourself:smile:. I love working with customers, and I think that's definately the best part of retail, however I wouldn't recommend anyone to do it as a life long job.
Sort things out with your mother otherwise your situation may deteriorate.
Make amends with your mum first. Even if shes wrong, swallow your pride and apologise. Then figure out a plan of what you can do and save up. Then move out. :dontknow:

I have A Levels in Philosophy, maths, and computing. I've applied to do Nursing in September but I guess that is more of back up plan, because it's not something I feel that passionately about:frown:

OK then. It's just that I volunteer in a charity shop at the moment, and I quite enjoy it and could see myself working in retail. I wouldn't mind doing a sales assistance job for a few years or so, which I was thinking of doing while also doing a degree with the Open Uni, so that when I finish that I can progress more easily into head office jobs.

So if working in retail isn't your idea of a life-long job, what else did you have in mind, do you know? Just curious

Ah, k. Was just curious. I must say, the way that you're handling this is admirable. I would probably be too depressed to even make a thread on TSR.

Happy birthday! I hope that you sort things out and that things improve.

I can't sort anything out with my mother tonight as she's refusing to talk things through. And I think she's drinking now, which definately won't help the situation :frown:
I'll have to try in the morning, hopefully she'll be calmer after a sleep

I guess it would have been better if I started handling things before they got to this stage, but nothing I can do about that now. I'm too sad/still in shock at my mum to actually do something productive as such, so posting this was the best I could do!
And thank you:smile:
