The description of the greek system was hilarious:biggrin: I'm a grad student now but in my undergrad (previous 4 years of my life), the greek system was big but it didn't make or break you. My college was big so there were always things to do. If you don't want to drink, you don't have to. Unfortunately, media (and the greeks themselves) have giving themselves a bad name. They're not all crazy, wild and throwing morals to the wind.

Since it's coming up to the start of a new academic year I thought I'd
take this opportunity to explain how lucky you Americans are to have a
fraternity system.

English Universities are so dull by comparison. Like most students
in England I had to rent private accommodation for my second and third
years, but it never occurred to us to build a whole culture around
collectively renting a rather dilapidated house in Clapham. It wasn't
even single sex accommodation, so we couldn't engage in the fun and
games of para-homosexual activities - Girls just don't have the same
grip on your loyalties as your Greek brothers ;-). And while cliques
certainly form in English Universities, the are all much too boring to
come up with the idea of hazing. I fondly recall diving off a weir and
almost drowning when I was 12 because everyone said I was chicken. If
only it had been possible for me to gain respect in later life through
similar tests, and if these tests could have been combined with pseudo
Masonic rituals culminating in the awarding of a little badge, then
that truly would have made my time at University worthwhile. And while
I still have friends from University, these friendships seem so hollow
compared to bonds of fraternal brotherhood since they are not based on
solemn vows of fellowship, mutual sacrifice, group solidarity and
owning the same poxy little badge.
Then there's sheer joy alcohol seems to bring fraternity members..
By the time I went to university the delights of getting dangerously
drunk at parties had started to seem mundane. But to American students
in fraternities, the bravado of excessive alcohol consumption is a an
exciting new and illicit game where you can prove yourself worthy to
all your male friends and simultaneously circumvent college alcohol
policy - thereby proving what a rebel you are too. Gosh.
I am also rather fond of the references to ancient Greece.
It reeks of a history far nobler and grander than anything a British
University can instil its students with, and the wearing of togas
must make it seem as authentic as a ploughman's lunch.

I think what I am trying to say is that Fraternities give young
Americans the chance to grow up in their own time, and that it is
regrettable that no similar opportunity is afforded to European
Students. In particular, I find it sad that even some American
students forego the opportunity to wear togas and claim to be Greek.
Really this should be mandatory, so every graduate will be secure in
the knowledge that they have gained something much more valuable than
a degree from an American University - a little badge with some Greek
letters on it.

Although I am not American, I admire the system so much that I would
dearly love to become an honorary member of a fraternity. I have set
my heart on becoming an alumni of Theta Omicron Sigma Sigma Epsilon Ro
Sigma. I do so hope this is possible.

Damn and there I was thinking going to university was about getting an education, a degree and then a decent job. But it's about the frats. Jeez what a waste my life has been.

I am being sarcastic by the way. Also your life must really be miserable if you think you've somehow missed out by not being an American Student.
Sounds like someone has just finished watching American Pie 5

That fraternity spells 'Tossers' i bet they feel silly now.

It actually spells "thossers", as theta represents a (voiceless) dental fricative. The initial voiced alveolar plosive of "tossers" (/t/) is written with tau.

Rather spoils the joke.

This is why I envy American students, they spare no expense when designing their university weight rooms:
Americans are pussies at drinking. Just yesterday I heard from my Arizonian cousin that she "drank 12 shots and was sick this morning."
"Over what period of time?"
"Eh, between 11 and 3, pretty much."
12 shots over 5 hours? **** off, I'll happily go through 4-5 bottles of wine in that time.
The frat system is overrated. A fake, vapid, meaningless sense of unity that does nothing but make douchebags even douchier due to some empty sense of value at being part of a fraternity. UK societies win hands down.

I think you missed the irony.

Not quite sure how they missed it!

I do genuinely envy the American students in shows like Greek/Glory Daze etc. but I have a feeling that's nothing like reality. Just like I envy the doctors at Sacred Heart (Scrubs)!
This is such a case of 'Grass is greener' syndrome

This is satirical. Yes. "Theta Omicron Sigma Sigma Epsilon Ro Sigma.".

That was some subtle work, Mr. Troll.
Someone's been watching too much American TV. For the most part, the greek system isn't such a big deal anymore. At the college i went to, they were crap. Just an excuse to party. Respectable students don't join frats and sororities.
Dude, if only you'd come to Keele and joined the rugby society...
I can't imagine this is anything but a troll post, but nonetheless l'm going to put in my two cents about frats (having experienced greek life at a large university)

....the boys are *generally* rude, disgusting and have simultaneous superiority and entitlement complexes. Frat parties can be incredibly dangerous. When I refused to go home with a brother he put a roofie in my drink (luckily another girl saw him do this and warned me). Another time, a friend and I walked in on an unconscious girl getting raped in an upstairs bedroom by two of the brothers. Sexual assaults are scarily common and if the brothers do get caught or are threatened with legal action, the greek committee only revokes their title for a semester and they are back at their antics the next term. People fall off balconies, black out, overdose on drugs and get alcohol poisoning like it's a normal, everyday thing. The hazing the brothers have to go through is abusive and destructive. Greek life has evolved into something absolutely awful (at least at the university I attend). I think it truly used to be about the brotherhood and sharing that common bond, but now it's turned into a way for easy access to girls, booze and money.

I used to go for the free alcohol and dancing, but it's honestly not worth the hassle of interacting with these ***** anymore. I can't understand why any self-respecting guy would surrender his individuality in favor of the title of a "frat boy," which has all sorts of horrible connotations for those of us outside of the greek system.

Anyway, luckily the OP was being sarcastic.

Sounds like OP hasn't matured/gone through enough personal development to realise that they are an individual in their own right, and don't need to find find value from something exterior to himself.
Yeah, glory daze is a good program.
