You start as a band 6 pharmacist when you qualify, it then normally takes most pharmacists 2-3 years and the completion of a clinical diploma to advance to a band 7 pharmacist. After that it's very much variable - I've known pharmacist progress to band 8a posts after only a year or so of being a band 7. It is very variable and depends on jobs becoming available in the area in which you want to specialise in.

Ah I see, my issue with hospital pharmacy is that I was under the impression that people earning the high sums of money (ie 60k+) on the top bands were old and generally in their 40's/50's, is this not more than often the case though?

Probably, but a band 6/7 is MASSIVE amounts of money and more than enough to live comfortably on. Don't turn your nose up at 30k - its more than a lot of families make (including mine) combined.

Why is that an issue?

To be earning 60K+ in hospital you need to have been working as an 8c pharmacist for a while or an 8d or 9, so yes that generally means 'older' pharmacists. But as the previous poster said band 6 and 7 is in general terms not that bad. As a band 7 I earn more than my parents do put together ...

My uncle is really struggling at the moment. He has his own pharmacy but business is going very slow. It doesn't help that he has to compete with boots, cohens, lloyds etc
